I am Pegasus

The myth of the winged horse

By Novel AllenPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

I exist within the land of mist and magic, where witches witch, fairies sprinkle sparkly dust upon sleeping beings, and wishes are granted to the well deserving.

There are places where evil lurk and witches boil their cauldrons, where sneaky walkers and stalkers of the night consult with the darkness concerning the affairs of the heart and the general thieving of another's lot.

The Gods had blessed me and my kind with wings, we walked the earth and flew upon the rainbowed strands of wispy clouds.

When man first walked the earth, the winged horses were their constant and loving companions. These were no ordinary horses though. They were magical, lovely, colorfully enchanting, bewitching and dazzling. These horses were allowed by the creators to bond with a human and be their life companion.

There was only one condition that separated man and beast from the Gods. They could fly with them across the universe, but must never enter the forbidden zone of the Rainbow Bridge of Knowledge. This bridge was what kept the veil of good and evil intact.

Now, everyone wanted to know what lies beyond the zone. And as will ever be with humans, the quest to have that which is forbidden is forever like a dare which itches and burns at the inner core of them. An itch that they desperately need to displace themselves of.

Sadly, the horses too longed to ride and soar high above the stars to where the mystic, forbidden, enchantment and allure beckoned their beauty and immortal pride. So they colluded with the humans.

If every single horse and every single human snuck up into the heavens one dark and moonless night while the gods slept. Surely they could overpower them and become masters of both the upper and lower realms of time and space.

And so they plotted and planned and decided on a day. The night came when the moon shone not her caressing calming light.

I, Pegasus, had flown with the gods on those days when they secretly came to visit with nymphs, witches and fairies and indulge in frolicking with earthly pleasures. I knew what existed beyond the stars. I had been there many times, but was bound to secrecy. I could not warn of the dangers which these wanton unruly lot were opening up for themselves.

Up they flew, horses and riders bonded, up past the forbidden zone and into the realms of the gods.

Up to the Bilröst, the burning rainbow bridge that reaches between Midgard (Earth) and Asgard, the realm of the gods. The bridge as attested to being the Bilröst in the Poetic Edda, is the bridge that ends in heaven at Himinbjörg, the residence of the god Heimdall, who guards it from the jötnar. The bridge which originally represented the Milky Way and have noted parallels between the bridge and another bridge of the Norse gods.

The clouds beckoned to me, to hide myself within their rainbow shroud, I stood alone, hardly daring to breathe.

"Be very quiet", the wispy, soft enveloping cocoon of softness whispered, "or they will certainly find you".

This handsome princely, proud horse stood in fear, sadly thinking back on the events of the past few days.

Suddenly a great blinding light split the night asunder, the clouds parted, a great rumbling and tumbling of horses and riders ensued. Faster than the eye could perceive the air carried the bodies as they careened through space and time.

The wings of the horses filled the air with featherlike flakes of colors as they dislodged themselves and flew east, west, north and south, burning as they went.

The clouds conveyed me to a safe distance, then turned and caught the falling, panicking bodies. Fire had engulfed some as they fell. The clouds saved as many as they could.

The gods sealed the heavens, never will any being be able to cross until the day of reckoning of man and gods.

I, Pegasus, was the only horse left with wings from that day forward. Thanks to the clouds, my wings were saved.

Another dazzling and brilliant display of color. I love how you blended the Norse Myth of the rainbow bridge into your prismatic airborne steeds. It's so Everything.

  • Lady Novel, you took my Pegasus to new heights. A long time ago, when I wrote poems and prose on paper with a pencil, I penned many tributes to Pegasus. I am glad to see this. 💙✍️💙
