Demeter's Chosen
An Epic Beginnings microfiction
Overall, Demeter thought of themselves as a good person.
Daughter of a Heroine who could talk to animals, and able to control plants herself, of course she'd grown up an environmental activist long before she'd started saving the world.
Sometimes, Demeter didn't know which profession was harder.
Sure, being a Superhero meant a hectic schedule dealing with a revolving door of Supervillains, Rogues, and assorted petty criminals... but at least the Press didn't question whether they'd actually committed a crime, or accuse Demeter of 'Fake Science'. Unlike the Headlines when Demeter took off the mask and used her Civilian identity to picket an Oil Company that had just caused billions of dollars of ecological damage, added her name to an awareness campaign, or took part in a demonstration.
Demeter didn't agree with the more radical protestors who thought inconveniencing the General Public and damaging national monuments was the way to go, but the Cause itself was solid.
As Demeter, she knew her actions were just and lawful.
As a Civilian.... well, there were days when Villainy started to look extremely tempting. Especially when she was trying to get a research grant and chair after chair replied with rejections along the liness of 'but how would this be profitable'?
No start-up made a profit in the short term, and the long-term depended on actually getting governments to get behind eco=friendly policies, but sure, Grants would throw funding away on a self-toasting bread-knife, before they considered something that would create building materials out of plastic waste!
No wonder so many Mad Scientists went Supervillain... How many of them had been just Scientists, up until one bad day and a form rejection email?
Demeter tried not to think too hard about that, either.
An alarm sounded, and Demeter reached for her mask. Hero-Time.
