The Rise of Unionizer
An Epic Beginnings Microfiction
Teenage Superheroes needed a Union, and Unionizer needed an excuse to stay off the front lines.
Late to his powers, the child of an Elemental who could channel lightning and a Civilian one-night-stand, Unionizer had the uninspiring power of making energy sources go flat. Great if he happened to be facing someone utterly reliant on technology, fairly useless the rest of the time, but take down one giant robot and suddenly everyone expects you to be standing toe to toe with Superman.
No, thank you!
Being Second-Generation, Unionizer had known a lot of teenage superheroes in his youth. The percentage that had actually made it to adulthood and their own Hero Careers was... disheartening.
Many fell out with their Superhero mentors and lost their support network. The ones that survived that found out how hard it was to juggle saving the world and keeping the lights on if you weren't a billionaire.
Fulminata, Unionizer's mother, had insisted on his graduating before he worried about being a Superhero, especially since he'd been a late bloomer. Not all of his friends had been so lucky, in their parents or their careers.
Unionizer started small, approaching the teenaged Supers individually or in small groups, getting their feedback while he organized the paperwork. Union fees (and donations from rich Heroes who wanted their kids to talk to them again) would go to a general fund, to be used for online schooling for anyone who had too many Unexcused Absences to graduate. At least one day per Quarter, Members would make themselves available to cover Patrols or Crimefighting for other Members who had a make-up exam or Doctor's appointment.
At least once a month, Members would actually use their Sick-and-Social Days.
It took less than a week for the Super-Council to declare him a Supervillain
