Chuckles Followed By Belly Laughs

He had the best laugh she had ever heard.

He was always such a thoughtful man; and he took in every word you said. Not like most, who listen to respond, he listened, and he heard you. More than that, he tried his best to understand it all, and help whenever he could.

But what she loved the most about him, was his contagious laughter. Chafter was how she described it. A ten-minute laugh.

It started slow, with a silly, drawn-out chuckle, to be polite, maybe.

Then, the humor grew deeper and louder, every-time he reran it through his thoughtful mind. It would then settle into his gut; that was when the deep belly laugh would begin.

As the laughter progressed, he would shake his head, like he couldn't believe the depths of the humor he had just ingested. And as he gave in to the seriousness of the laugh, he would inevitably slap his knee, rocking backwards to catch his breath, before spurting another unrestrained howl.

Before you knew what was happening, the entire room was laughing along. No-one cared why, it was just so inviting, so cleansing, so joyous, you just had to laugh along with him.

Then came the heavy sigh, signaling he was about to chuckle again, like he was resetting something deep inside.

Yeah, Boyd was the inventor of the most treasured chafter anyone had ever heard or would ever hear again. (RIP, dad)

What a marvelous tribute, coining a word for your dad's mirth. I've experienced "chafter" a few times in my life. What a gift to have enjoyed it so frequently.

That kind of laughter is contagious and cathartic and I think you came up with the perfect name for it.

What a beautiful tribute to your father. His contagious laughter sounds like it was truly special. I can imagine how it would fill a room with joy and bring everyone together.
