Can a Robot Ever Become Your Friend?

Robot as Friends

By Minu SinghPublished 3 years ago 2 min read

To summarize, in a science fiction novel, the question arises whether robots would be portrayed as enemies or friends of humanity. Exploring the concept of human-robot friendship, it is important to understand the significance of friendship in our lives and its impact on our well-being. Research has shown that friendships contribute to better physical and mental health, similar to romantic relationships.

Friendships have been undervalued historically but are now recognized as beneficial. Friendships not only lead to social and physical activity but also activate reward centers in the brain. Strong connections with friends are associated with longer and healthier lives. Valuable friendships provide various health benefits, including a lower risk of hypertension, better sleep, faster healing, and enhanced immune response.

Considering the role of robots in human relationships, robots are distinct from other machines. They interact with the world, adapt, respond, and independently perform tasks. With advancements in robotics, there is an increase in human-robot interactions, and the number of robots in the world is projected to rise. However, whether robots can become true friends and improve our physical and mental health like human friends is a question to explore.

Currently, there are robots capable of intelligent tasks, such as adjusting their responses to individuals and organizing themselves without human input. Examples include prosthetic arms that adapt to the wearer's needs and physical therapy robots that coach patients based on individual requirements. Additionally, swarm robots can collaborate and organize autonomously to fulfill tasks, making them suitable for hazardous missions.

Although robots possess these capabilities, true friendship involves mutual goodwill, admiration, and shared values. Bonding with robots is often seen as a waste of emotional energy since robots can only simulate emotions and cannot form human-to-human bonds. However, it is natural for humans to extend emotional connections to manufactured and pre-programmed entities. This connection may not equate to human friendships based on Aristotle's definition, but it can fulfill our social needs and provide companionship, comfort, and social interaction.

Forming human-robot friendships has its risks, such as neglecting relationships with other people. If people prioritize their connections with machines over human relationships, it can lead to problems. However, robots becoming enemies in the sense depicted in science fiction movies is not a likely scenario. Rather, the potential risk lies in individuals prioritizing robot companionship over human connections, as already observed with excessive engagement in video games and social media.

In conclusion, while robots may not form friendships comparable to human relationships based on Aristotle's definition, they can serve as companions and address our social needs. They can provide comfort, emotional support, and enjoyable interactions without judgment or rejection. It is important to recognize the potential risks and strike a balance between human connections and interactions with robots.
