It was a cold, quiet December morning as the snow fell and nature itself conspired to bury the truth, a blood-curdling scream pierced the serenity. The scream came after a simple argument that led to my wife storming out and stumbling into my study for the first time in years. She’d found my secret. I knew as I walked slowly to the doorway, she was slumped against the bookcase in shock. There was no escape from the inevitable. “Yes, darling. I’ve been testing pain thresholds—and now, it’s your turn,” I smiled, locked the door, and sealed her fate.

Thanks for reading!

Author's Notes: For Sarah Parker's fun little Horror Micro-fiction (Unofficial Challenge). (98 words by Vocal's word counting). I may well do more, but this one screamed out to me (get it? baha).

I am apparently blind and thought I hadn't liked this story yet. I clicked the like button, thereby unliking it, and had to relike it when I realized my mistake. So, in the end, your story is doubly liked!

Ooooo! I'll take more of this (but that might ruin the micro magic of it all)... I love how you made it so captivating and tense with such a small word count!! Great work Paul!!

Quite the horror for the wife. Could make you see snow in a different light in a way.

Yikes! This is great, buddy. He must have had some nasty setup there, for that reaction. I like how the ending leaves us to wonder.

    Well that was horrifying 🤯

Yo yo. “Testing pain thresholds” is such a creepy and annoyingly ambivalent phrase! Can’t have been too noble if he has to do away with her. Do you come to this Vocal place often!?

And what her pain might be, Paul, we're left to know. Short, sweet, and well-written.

After my recent flair up of fibromyalgia, I'll take your challenge and bet an additional 10K. (sorry...I'm still sore from2 nights of sleepless pain which is now subsiding into said soreness.) Great drabble, though!!! Reeled me in...

Oh no! "Testing pain thresholds" and then leaving us like that to wonder what she'd stumbled across? Eeek!
