A Weekend Hill Walk
An Attempt At Positive Fiction

Introduction
This is a challenge I set myself in the article below to write a totally positive fiction story. Quite rightly people suggested writing a childrenâs story, but I do tend to make things difficult for myself. Although this story refers to adversity for others in the note (you will see what I mean when you read this), this is an adult story that is totally positive, although children could read it or be told it. I hope that you enjoy it and would love to hear your opinions in the comments either here or on Facebook.
Thank you for your time.
A Very Positive Fiction
Setting Off
Jack and Joe were going to spend a couple of hours hill walking, a change from the working week this Saturday morning. There was no football on due to the international break, though the England match was on television tonight so that might be entertaining with a few beers as they wer playing San Marino at Wembley.
A couple of sandwiches and coffee flasks in their small rucksacks, some decent boots and clothing to keep the warm if it got blowy (which it normally did on the hills) but this was a new place they were going to.
It was a thirty minute drive, so not very far, and they were the only car in the car park, and in front of them, well about a thousand yards away was the main hill they were going to walk up.
The Hill
Jack and Joe walked up the hill to see what they could see, it was almost a nursery rhyme, but it was a pleasant if challenging walk, but not too hard for them. They looked after themselves so were fit enough to take this in their stride and were looking forward to the views from the top, hopefully they could get some good photographs and maybe even video to post on Instagram and Facebook.
The weather was not too cold or breezy and eventually they made the summit, which had a couple of benches and a cairn. There was the detritus of a fire so someone had cooked or camped here recently.
Joe said âWhatâs that down there?â
Jack replied âIt looks like a hut, maybe itâs one to provide shelter if people get stuck out here, but it is really quite close to the road we came in on, but I think we should go and take a look. Who knows what we might find?â
They started down the hill and ten minutes later they were at the door of the hut.
The Croft
The door was unlocked and inside it was light as there was a window. There was a fireplace with logs so this could be a place of shelter if needed. They they saw a note blu tacked to a table, this is what it said.

Joe looked at Jack. âIs this serious?â
They looked across the room and there were two cases next to the wall.
They opened both, one contained Mars, Snickers (âI still call them Marathonsâ said Joe) and bags of Maltesers, great for a sweet tooth, the other filled with twenty pound notes.
âWe could just take he suitcaseâ said Jack
âNoâ said Joe âWe follow this guys instructions and we get two hundred pounds for it, we donât need the money, but it is nice to have a little extra and we can help out some people who actually need itâ
They both took five hundred pounds each, two Mars Bars and two Snickers to add to their sandwich packs.
Jack and Joe left the croft as they found, a bit lighter on money and chocolate, but no doubt that would be replenished by X.
Home
âWell that was a wonderful day, great weather, a great walk and an unexpectedly excellent discoveryâ said Joe.
They both made plans to visit a local Food Bank and Soup Kitchen to drop in their hundred pounds each, then to give twenty pounds to any homeless people they met in town this week. That would either pay for a night in a hostel or get them something to eat.

Good job. You succeeded in writing a positive story. I liked the note that was a fun twist.
I love that this was just a happy, positive story about two people just going about their day and things turning out well. Mission accomplished. Your story put a smile on my face :) Thank you!
These guys were great, including X. Wish more people were like this and are always ready to help others. On second thought, you actually are like this. So I wish more people were like you. Thank you for everything that you do!
I love this positive story! Right now is a stressful time, and I needed to read something just like this. Thanks!
I love the way this turned out! I have to admit, Iâm so used to reading non positive stories that it seemed like the suitcases might be a trap of some sort. I guess we need more stories like this.
This is an excellent start, but I'm waiting for more, like I want to know what happens (adversely Ha! to the guys as they go to distribute the money!đ
