A Storm in a teacup

Run - Microfiction

By KodahPublished 2 years ago 2 min read

The little girl sat huddled in the corner of her dimly lit bedroom, knees pulled tight against her chest.

She could hear the muffled sounds of the storm raging into the petite teacup that holds the dysfunctional enterprise of psychological aid.

Tears streaming down the girl's cheeks as she rocks back and forth. For now, she could only sit alone in the darkness and wait for the storm to pass.

The storm disappears for a second. Creating peace within the little girl's mind of riot. It doesn't seem to be a riot any longer when the girl gets a gentle knock on her door.

Frightened she is, she refused to say a word, say a breath...

The door creaked open, introducing sounds of small footsteps. Claws clicking.

A rabbit?

A fluffy white rabbit with a pink nose twitching curiously~

"A rabbit?"- The little girl gets up from her bed.

The rabbit twitches its nose and then bolts away. It races back to the cracked open door and escapes through it.

"Hey, come back!" She follows the rabbit.

She hurries after the rabbit while it makes its way to the front door. The rabbit was able to open the front door too...

Her hand touches the door as she checks behind her shoulder, the storm is still silent~

Eyes looking back at the rabbit, she slowly walks out of the door. She shuts it gently behind her as she tiptoes her way to the rabbit ahead of her.

"Hello, Mr. Rabbit!"

"You need to leave now."- The rabbit opens his mouth.

"You talk!?"

"You need to leave now."- He repeats.

"Hm? How come?"

"Run, run fast. Flee this chaos and don't look back. Just keep running."

She was confused and unable to comprehend his speech.

"Go fast. There are more places where constant arguing isn't plagued."- The rabbit sprints out of the front yard.

She repeats the rabbit's words. -"Go fast?"

That's when she didn't look back. She's looking at the new world in front of her, the little flame inside her burns brighter and brighter and brighter and her blood is electric, and the world has now turned technicolor.

She takes her last steps out of her front yard, breaking into a run as she leaves the premises of outrage behind.

Its loss and regret and misery and yearning that drive the story forward, along with its twisted read. She is now on that road~

Sprinting with panic and no destination in mind, she continues to run faster away from her problems. Just running is all the rabbit said~

Run. Run, run.

Run faster, Run!

That's it! Faster!

Wait.

The bunny isn't with the girl anymore.

So who is telling her to run?

....

  • Oh wow, I had no idea of the meaning of storm in a teacup and the rabbit symbolism. Loved your story so much!

    So shocking

  • So powerful and intriguing, very well explained also with the facts in the end. I thought it might be some sort of mental health due to abuse or some problems at home. Poor girl..

Great one Kodah. This was incredibly powerful.

Was it her mind’s illusions picturing the rabbit?? 😮

  • Carrie 2 years ago

I was shocked by the ending! Never know what might be mentally wrong with someone. Great story!

  • Have you read any John Updike? Rabbits are mischievous in nature and easily frightened; domestically they become quite lazy, like humans perhaps. Well done Kodah!
