The rise and popularity of Crumbl Cookies

Crumbl Cookies

Crumbl cookies started as a family bakery to a million dollar franchise and global phenomenon thanks to social media, national weekly delish cookies, and the iconic pink box.

Crumbl was founded by cousins Sawyer Hemsley and Jason McGowan in 2017 while Hemsley attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah. The idea started when Hemsley (then a business student at Utah State University) and McGowan (with a background in technology/marketing) teamed up to bake what they hoped would be the “perfect” chocolate-chip cookie.

Sawyer Hemsley and Jason McGowan

"Before Crumbl’s inception, I found success in the tech industry, developing websites, apps and companies in Utah and Silicon Valley. Around 2015, my cousin, Sawyer Hemsley, embarked on his entrepreneurial path, launching a clothing brand named Embr during college. Impressed by the brand, I decided to invest. As time progressed, managing Embr became a challenge for Sawyer due to his academic commitments. I eventually merged the brand with another business venture of mine. In due time, both Sawyer and I recognized our synergy. While I had a penchant for visionary thinking, Sawyer was a logistical prodigy. Post-Embr, we would often brainstorm, trying to pinpoint our next joint venture. The idea of cookies eventually clicked."

Both never had professional baking experience but their approach blended creativity with data-driven experimentation. Using a method inspired by tech product testing, they tried dozens of recipe variations and gathered direct feedback from friends, family, and community members. Once they developed their signature milk chocolate-chip cookie.

They opened Crumbl’s first storefront, complete with an open-concept kitchen that allowed customers to witness the baking process in real time. The original location was in a building that was up for demolition, and it initially sold only milk chocolate chip cookies before expanding to a rotating menu. A major factor in Crumbl’s rapid popularity was its commitment to building a memorable brand. The introduction of its now-iconic pink box helped distinguish the company visually, while the decision to adopt a rotating weekly menu transformed cookie-buying into an ongoing experience. Every week, the menu rotates to feature an updated set of six exciting desserts. With our co-founders’ search for innovation, we frequently add new flavors to the menu and work to improve current recipes. Concentrating on developing delicious cookies inspired by popular flavors, tasty treats, and decadent desserts.

Crumbl Cookies become so popular endorsed by celebrity brand names like the Kardashian Krumbl Cookies even though everyone isn't a fun of Kourtney's flourless cake, Benson Boone cookie,

and recently Martha Stewart.

Crumbl and Dove even collaborated their body care line by one. The newest sweet treat to join the dessert-driven lineup is Nilla Bean Cupcake.

The growth was especially strong during and after the COVID-19 pandemic: by August 2020 they had 100 locations; by July 2021, 149; by end of 2021, over 300 stores; by July 2022, they had over 400 locations in 45 states. As Crumbl grew, it sometimes faced criticism notably for labor issues: in 2022, multiple franchise locations were cited for violations of child-labor rules.By focusing on quality, presentation, and consumer engagement, the brand succeeded in transforming a simple treat into a cultural trend. Today, Crumbl Cookies stands as a testament to how creativity, branding, and strategic marketing can elevate a small idea into a national enterprise. With over a thousand locations and an ever-changing menu, Crumbl remains a leader in the gourmet cookie market and continues to influence how younger generations experience and share their favorite desserts.Over time, Crumbl expanded from just the classic chocolate-chip to many more flavors and offerings including delivery, catering, and nationwide shipping. As of 2024, Crumbl remains one of the fastest-growing dessert franchise chains in the U.S. with over 1,000 stores.
