Hard candy, or boiled sweets, is a type of candy made from one or more sugar-based syrups heated to 320 degrees F., or 160 degrees C, then hardened and broken into pieces. It can be traced back to Ancient Egyptian times when they would mix honey with fruits and nuts. It was later adopted by the Greeks, who turned them into sweet treats. The version we know today was invented in the 16th century and became widespread in the 19th century during the Industrial Revolution. Hard candy is often made with ingredients that can benefit your overall health. Here are some that do just that.
Butterscotch Discs

Butterscotch is made by boiling butter with brown sugar. It can help you meet certain nutritional needs by providing you with a good amount of potassium and carbohydrates. This will give your body an instant energy boost to complete physical tasks. It can reduce inflammation in the lungs, helping those with breathing problems. Since butter is a key ingredient, it can cause you to have healthy, glowing skin. They can be digested without increasing your body’s glycemic index (blood sugar level). Butterscotch has also been known to improve brain function, eye health, and the immune system.
Peppermint

Peppermint is one of the most popular flavors in the world. It can also soothe an upset stomach and help aid in digestion. Peppermint’s calm, numbing effect can be used to treat headaches, nausea, and cramping. They can relieve clogged sinuses commonly found with bacterial infections. It can soothe anxiety associated with depression while improving your overall energy. Because of its muscle-relaxing properties, sucking on one before bed can improve your sleep. Just make sure you finish it before lying down so you don’t choke on it.
Lemon Drops

Lemon drops have been a popular hard candy since it began production in Europe in the late 18th century. Lemon drops are commonly used as throat lozenges for sore throats and excessive, dry coughing. The juice used to make the candy is rich in Vitamin C. Cancer patients suck on them to decrease the speed at which radiation reaches the parotid gland (the gland that produces spit, to aid in digestion). The saliva you produce while sucking on it helps with plaque control and protects the mouth from infection. Lemon drops are great at treating Xerostomia, or Dry Mouth for this reason.
Hard Caramel

Caramel is used commercially to give a variety of food and drinks color. It is also used to prevent spoilage, as it has strong antioxidant properties. These antioxidants can also protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals known to cause many types of disease. The amount of sugar used to make the caramel makes it an easy source to boost your body’s blood glucose level in a diabetic emergency. The salt used to make it can raise your blood pressure during a significant drop as well. When feeling fatigued, eating some can give you a quick energy boost.
Root Beer Candy

Root beer candy was invented by the same pharmacist who invented the drink at the turn of the 20th century. Root beer contains a variety of herbs, roots, and berries that are all known for medicinal properties. Sassafras is a diuretic that commonly cleans the blood and promotes healthy skin. Wintergreen leaf can prevent gas and ease nerve pain. Licorice root is beneficial in ulcer treatment by reducing inflammation of the stomach lining. Ginger can relieve nausea and indigestion. The dandelion root flushes toxins from your body.
