Thanksgiving is fast approaching and for me store bought pies just don't taste the same. My grandma left me these recipes and I want to share them with you along with lists of ingredients and some tips and tricks.

Tips and Tricks

I want to start with tips and tricks before you try any of the recipes. First thinks first. I abbreviate teaspoon (TSP) and tablespoon (TBS). I'll be using imperial system for all measurements. I will be linking to Walmart for the brands I personally use, but if the ingredient comes up more than once than I won't be linking it again. When you line the pie tin make sure to leave about and inch of access dough on all sides. When you put on the top crust of the pie crimp the edges. To do this take your pointer finger and thumb and squish the bottom dough and top dough or use a fork and your finger. When you go to bake the pie put foil on the edges so you don't burn them. If your pie has a top crust before you put it in the oven brush milk and sprinkle sugar on the crust. This is completely optional, but I really like the taste it creates. Most importantly have fun baking is suppose to be fun!!!!

This is the pie crust I use for all these pies but you can use store bought pastry if wanted.

Ingredients:

  • 3 Cups of Flour
  • 1 Cup of Shortening (Crisco works best)
  • 1/2 TSP Salt
  • 1 TBS Vinegar
  • 1/2 Cup of Water
  • 1 Egg
  1. Add flour, shortening, and salt. MIX WELL
  2. In separate bowl mix vinegar, water, egg MIX WELL
  3. Add Wet mix to dry mix
  4. Mix until a dough ball forms.
  5. Roll out and put in pie tins

This makes roughly 4-5 pie crusts. You can freeze it for up to a year as long as it is sealed very well.

Ta-da you are down with making the pie crusts.

Meme's Pumpkin Pie

This is my great grandmothers recipe for a really good pumpkin pie. She made her own pumpkin puree, but I use store bought. Either way works. HERE is a great recipe to make your own puree.

      Ingredients:

      • 2 Cups Pumpkin Puree (16 oz)
      • 2 Cups of Milk (whole milk works best, but any will do)
      • 3 Eggs
      • 2 Cups of Sugar ( I use 1 1/2 cups of sugar)
      • 1 TBS Butter
      • 1/4 TSP Salt, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Ginger, Allspice ( I like to taste and go from there)
      1. Preheat oven to 375 makes 1 pie
      2. Mix Pumpkin, Eggs, Sugar, Butter, Spices. MIX REALLY WELL
      3. Add Milk MIX WELL
      4. Add to already pastry lined pie tin LINE EDGES WITH FOIL!
      5. Bake until toothpick comes out clean from the middle. Roughly an hour mins

YOU DID IT! Pumpkin pie down!

      Cherry Pie

I found this recipe out of a old cookbook and it tastes extremely good.

      Ingredients:

    • 1 1/4 Cup of Sugar
    • 3 TBS of Cornstarch
    • 5 1/2 Cups of Fresh or Frozen Pitted Cherries. (40 oz)
    1. Preheat oven to 375
    2. Stir together sugar and cornstarch in BIG bowl
    3. Add cherries and gently toss
    4. Let stand until it starts to turn to syrup
    5. Put in pastry lined tin and put top crust on
    6. Milk and sugar the top ( Optional)
    7. Put foil on edges

If you are using fresh cherries your cook time is 30 minutes then take the foil off and cook for roughly 20 minutes ( till golden brown).

If you are using frozen cherries your cook time is 50 minutes with foil on then take off and wait until golden brown (20ish minutes). After I take the foil off I prefer to go in 10 minute intervals so that I don't burn the edges.

BOOM WE FINISHED THE CHERRY PIE.

    Pecan Pie

I really like pecan pie and this is my personal recipe.

    Ingredients:

  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Combine Eggs, Syrup, Butter, Vanilla
  3. Stir in pecans ( SLOWLY)
  4. Put in pastry lined pie tin
  5. Cover edges with foil
  6. Bake with foil roughly 25 mins
  7. Remove foil and cook till toothpick comes clean
