Popcorn is an essential to any movie night, but I like to add a little extra flavor. Sure, butter on popcorn is great, but when you mix in a little Parmesan cheese, popcorn becomes magical.

Serves maybe two people through approximately one episode of The Mandalorian. Serving size is open to debate.

Ingredients:

  • Popcorn kernels
  • 3 Tablespoons of butter
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese
  • Oil (I use vegetable oil, but olive oil is fine too.)
  • Needed cooking instruments: a medium saucepan w/lid, a spoon, and a large bowl.

Remember, making stove top popcorn is an art form. It takes time to develop the skill, so don't be discouraged if you're not great at it the first time you try. I am going to include the process here, because you may find it helpful.

Cooking instructions:

  • Pour kernels into the medium saucepan. Only put in enough kernels to cover the bottom of the saucepan.
  • Pour in enough oil to coat the popcorn kernels. Be generous.
  • Cover saucepan with the saucepan lid and gently shake/swirl contents so that the oil coats the kernels.
  • Turn on burner to low heat.
  • Whatever you do, don't walk away. Popcorn is not something you can just leave. Every few moments, shake and swirl contents to make sure the popcorn kernels don't burn.
  • While waiting for things to heat up, you can get out a bowl for your popcorn, and get out your butter and Parmesan cheese. 3 Tablespoons of butter is the approximate amount needed for a single batch of popcorn, but I respect the need to use more. Plus, you'll totally need more if you make more than one batch.
  • Once you hear popping, give the saucepan one more good shake to help prevent burning. Let the kernels pop. Shake once or twice throughout the popping sequence.
  • Just like with microwave popcorn, listen for the popping to slow. This will give you an idea of when the popcorn is done.
  • Remove from heat once popping slows/stops.
  • Transfer popcorn to waiting bowl.
  • Add your butter to your empty saucepan. Because the saucepan is still hot, the butter will melt. This totally saves on dishes. You're welcome.
  • Once the butter is melted, add your Parmesan cheese. While it isn't an exact ratio, around 2 Tablespoons of Parmesan cheese mixes well with 3 Tablespoons of butter.

Note: Don't add too much Parmesan cheese. The butter is what makes the mix stick to the popcorn, so when you add too much Parmesan, the cheese/butter mixture will just collect at the bottom of the bowl.

  • Drizzle cheese mixture over popcorn in small increments. Mix after each drizzle. This ensures that not just the top pieces are buttery and cheesy.
  • Enjoy!

Random popcorn stories to reach the word count:

  • When I was visiting China, I made popcorn in a frying pan. I wasn't sure it was going to work, but it did.
  • People in my freshman year dorm would set off the fire alarm at least once every one to two weeks. It was almost always because someone burnt microwave popcorn.
  • I once knew a family that regularly made popcorn with white chocolate drizzled on it. I found this annoying when I would go over to their house, because it looked like regular popcorn with butter. I don't like sweet popcorn.
  • One time there was a guy who was interested in my sister who would come over to hang out with our family. He didn't like popcorn, but he felt obligated to eat it when our family would make it. (I say at that point, you should save it for the people who do like it.)
  • There. I made the word count. Enjoy the popcorn and your movie.
