Pantry to Plate-Episode 2

Meatballs subs and breaking into my car!

By Carrie Kay Published about a year ago 3 min read

I went to the food pantry my church has. I got a few good things. I loaded up my car and loaded up my kids. Drive the 35 minutes home. Walking down the stairs to my house, I heard a beep from my car. My son was already out of the car, and my youngest was still getting out. I looked at my son and asked him like he would know, why my car beeped. None of us knew. I walked into the house to pee and start lunch for my kids. I was making cheeseburgers so I could get those started and grab the food box from my car.

I go to my car and try to open the back end where the food is, but it won't open. Weird, I thought. I go to the driver's door and try to open it, but it's locked, too. I search my pockets for my keys. Before I started searching for them, I already knew that I had left them in the car. I live in the mountains, so I never take my keys out. My husband always tells me to take them out, but I didn't listen.

I looked in my window and saw them sitting in the console. I texted my neighbor and asked if they had duct tape and a wire hanger. They did, and the husband headed down. We tried for a good 30 minutes. I was trying the hack where you duct tape a part of the window and then pull on the tape to pull the window down enough to get the hanger in and push a button. I didn't work. Youtube made it look so easy. So, my neighbor got the hangar in and tried to reach my keys, tried to reach the button near the handle, and the switch lowered down. No luck.

I texted my husband to see if he had a spare key to my car or if he knew if we had one. We did not. I messaged many friends and even posted in our local mountain group to see if anyone had anything to help us. No such luck.

Today, my husband picked up an unlock kit (real name). It cost me $90! He got home, and we finally got into my car. I learned to no longer keep my keys in the car. Hopefully, just throwing them on my seat is an easy habit to break.

The kids and I took the food out of the car. I still had no idea what I was going to make for dinner until I started putting the food away. Which by the way, I am very happy it was cold last night, and bear season is not happening right now because they would have for sure broken into my car. I found the chicken meatballs. I also found pastrami. I wasn't sure what I wanted to make cause they both sounded good. I asked the hubs. I didn't ask which one he wanted because I needed to make it easy for him to decide. I said how does meatball subs sound. He liked that idea.

So here is the breakdown of dinner tonight.

Meatballs- free from the food pantry.

Hotdog buns-free from food pantry

French fries-free from the food pantry

Ketchup-free from the food pantry

Mozzarella cheese-grocery story for $1.49

spaghetti sauce-$1.49 at the grocery store

I put the meatballs in a baking dish and mixed the spaghetti sauce with them. I let them bake at 375 for 30 minutes. I put the buns in another dish and put cheese on them. Once the balls were done cooking, I put them in the buns, added more cheese, and cooked until the cheese melted. I baked the fries at the same time. It turned out really good. My kids ate it, so that's a win for me.
