John Wick:Chapter 4 - A movie review

"John Wick: Chapter 4 - A Non-Stop Action Thriller That Leaves You Begging For More"

By Jeyakar JanarthananPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

John Wick: Chapter 4 is the latest entry in the acclaimed John Wick franchise, featuring Keanu Reeves reprising his role as the iconic assassin, John Wick. This film takes us deeper into the world of the High Table, a shadowy organization of assassins and crime lords that governs the underworld. The film opens with John on the run, having broken the rules of the High Table by killing one of its members on Continental grounds. He seeks to take revenge on the organization that has wronged him, leading to an epic showdown that is sure to thrill fans of the franchise.

The action sequences in this film are nothing short of incredible. The film features three major set pieces, each of which is a masterpiece of action cinema. The first set piece takes place at the Continental, the hotel that serves as a sanctuary for assassins. This sequence is a massive shootout and fight scene that somehow manages to top the finale action sequences of the previous three movies. It features a blind assassin named Caine, played by martial arts legend Donnie Yen, who joins forces with the High Table to take down John Wick.

The second set piece is a nightclub fight scene that uses water and lighting to great effect, resulting in a gorgeously shot and exhilarating action sequence. Finally, the third set piece is the film's climactic finale, which lasts almost an hour and is one of the most magnificent hours of action cinema ever put to screen. It features John Wick facing off against an army of assassins, culminating in a showdown between John, Caine, and the film's main antagonist, the Marquis de Gramont, played by Bill Skarsgård.

The villains in this film are some of the strongest in the series, with some of them wearing entirely bulletproof attire, making it harder for John to take them down. The film often feels like the last few levels of a video game, with each level getting harder and harder.

Keanu Reeves dedicates his all to these action sequences, performing most of the stunts himself. The highlight of his stunt prowess is a car chase shootout near the Arc de Triomphe that is sure to leave audiences breathless.

The film also boasts an impressive supporting cast, including martial arts legend Hiroyuki Sanada, Laurence Fishburne, and Scott Adkins, who delivers an impressive fighting performance even as he is unrecognizable in his fat suit, makeup, and false teeth.

The film also introduces a new character named Akira, played by Rina Sawayama, who adds an intriguing element to the story but is unfortunately forgotten about entirely by the film's end.

The film's pacing is one of its few weaknesses, with some scenes feeling longer than they should and the film alternating between giving tons of dialogue and tons of action. The Tracker, a new character introduced in this film, adds very little to the story and feels like another assassin in pursuit of John Wick.

However, these minor issues are overshadowed by the film's jaw-dropping choreography, fantastic production design, and neo-noir cinematography that matches Chad Stahelski's mind-blowing vision.

In conclusion, John Wick: Chapter 4 is a must-see for fans of the franchise and action cinema in general. It takes the series to new heights with its incredible action sequences, impressive supporting cast, and thrilling storyline.

Despite its minor flaws, the film is a tour de force of action cinema that will leave audiences breathless and eager for more. A score of 9/10 is well-deserved for this excellent film that sets the gold standard for the genre.
