Who doesn’t know spinach, Popeye’s favorite food?

Indeed, spinach is a vegetable with high nutritional value, and it should hold an essential part in anyone’s diet.

Spinach can be cooked in numerous ways and methods, and one of the most popular is by making the traditional spinach pie.

Spinach pies can be cooked in many variations, according to the different ingredients used.

So what do we have?

Michelle Obama-White House Spinach Pie

When I read the title of this blog post, I was very curious to know what different way First Lady Michelle Obama had coined to prepare this popular recipe. She used lots of garlic (six cloves!) compared to one clove of garlic used in spinach pie recipes. She also used lemon zest and chopped fresh thyme leaves. I have to note that she didn’t use as much onion, whether brown, red, or fresh, and the presence of a large quantity of garlic definitely made the difference.

The most commonly used spinach pie recipe

In this recipe, you can find the ingredients that are most commonly used in this dish (apart from spinach, of course!), which are: olive oil, brown and green onion, garlic, parsley, and two cheese varieties, that is, feta and ricotta; overall, a marvelous, simple, and balanced recipe.

Spinach pie with dill and nutmeg

As you can probably imagine, the different ingredient in this recipe is dill, which gives a more delicate flavor that is lighter than parsley or mint. On top of that, you add ground nutmeg, ground black pepper, and finally, butter, instead of olive oil. When selecting your cheese, you have the alternative option of using cottage cheese. The origin of this spinach pie recipe is the Middle East.

Spinach pie with silverbeet

I never thought I could make a spinach pie with silverbeet! You live and learn. Silverbeet can be mistaken for spinach, and it also looks like lettuce. Anyway, I am sure you can impress your guests by serving them spinach pie with silverbeet, or maybe name it “silverbeet pie”. It will be a very rare dish!

Spinach pie with mozzarella cheese

While feta cheese is the favorite option when making a spinach pie, why not try using mozzarella? Also, by adding roasted red peppers and dried oregano, you will certainly give your pie a strong Italian taste.

Spinach pie with prosciutto ham

Although spinach pie is considered to be a vegetarian dish (in Greece they may not add any cheese, so the pie will be completely free of animal products), it would be a good idea to add meat to your spinach pie, for more protein, and in order to increase its nutritional value. Don’t forget to add a dash of white pepper, as well.

Spinach pie with pepperoni and mushrooms

If you really like the taste of cooked meat in your dish, then adding pepperoni will make you more than happy. Mushrooms will marry well with pepperoni and give a more balanced flavor. This particular recipe will finally be spicier than other spinach pie recipes, since you will add some type of Swiss or parmesan cheese, mustard, and oregano leaves. Don’t forget to pair the dish with an aged red wine to get an excellent culinary result!

Spinach pie with mint

All of the usual ingredients, with the only difference being the use of the humble-looking, but mighty-tasting mint!
