Tea time.

It's may be a time to relax. It may be a time to be energized. For some it’s the perfect beverage to enjoy while looking out the window on a rainy day. Or, it may be a quick drink in hopes to take in a much needed caffeine fix. For many it's a time to connect with others while sipping on the warm flavors of the earth. Friends gather, sharing stories and laughing, each having their own agenda or purpose. One may be confiding in another, while others are there to gossip about their in-laws. For some, this is a time to reflect. Perhaps journaling is accompanying the cup of leaves. Whatever the reason, tea time is a special time.

Traditionally tea has taken on many different roles. Tea time is a common social drinking event, as seen in British afternoon tea parties. Family and friends gather and chat over a cup of their favorite flavor. For some cultures including Chinese, Japanese and Korean, tea performs in a ceremonial act that involves both the preparation and the drinking. Over time these ceremonies changed course and became hobbies as well as tourist attractions. However, where the intention is needed, the ceremonial celebration can still be found in its purest form. Tea time has not lost its meaning in those that cherish what it can bring.

Whether it be a tradition or a social affair, tea is enjoyed by millions across the globe daily. Though some are utilizing this flavor filled drink for a small caffeine buzz, others are experiencing it for different reasons, some personal, or some ritual. Of these reasons, many seek the flavor that tea brings to their senses. But what flavors can possibly come from these leaves? The possibilities are endless.

Historically tea was brewed from the leaves of the tea plant. This plant comes in many varieties, resulting in a variety of different flavors of the beverage that has been so popular through time. For simplicity, the tea plants are referred to as white, yellow, green, oolong or black. Each has it's own unique flavor as well as aroma. In addition, each gives its own unique handful of health benefits. Some choose the tea for taste, while others go for the flavor experience. Perhaps it’s a combination of the two that keep fans coming back for more.

Tea brewing does not stop at the tea plant. Included in the realm of tea time is herbal tea. Here one takes leaves, roots, flowers, bark, or basically anything from a plant and steeps it in hot water. The abundance of flavor is unreal. From earthy to sweet, savory to citrus, the many flavors as well as combinations have opened the doors of endless possibilities regarding tea. In addition to the brewed plants, flavors can be added. Many add honey, milk, sugar, lemon, or any additive that may enhance the essence of the plant. Once the desired flavor is achieved, it is time to enjoy.

Sitting down and enjoying a cup of tea, hot or cold, does not need to be a simple event. Many tea parties or occasions involve finger foods, pastries, not to mention dancing or car games that many be included. Some are very dressy affairs where others may be at home events including a good book and a comfy blanket. It is up to the drinker to determine if the occasion should involve others or activities.

Whatever one chooses as their tea time, make the most of this gift from the earth.

Social. Solace. Active or quiet. Tea time is a purposeful event.
