I am sitting here, crossed legged like they teach me at school. My body tingling with excitement and fascination as I stare in wonder at the man in front reading his favourite story. Each year my dad brings me here. He said it was because I was a very special boy and that I had been really good throughout the whole year. There were a few other children sat around. They must have been very good as well and each one had a smile just as big as mine (but mine must have been the brightest as the man looked up from his book and smiled right at me).

It was getting to my favourite part, I can feel the butterflies in my belly. All the other kids where getting ready as well as this is the bit we can join in.

"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN! On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN! We shouted with glee. One of the other kids was even on his feet which made Father Christmas laugh so much. His belly all jiggling in that bright red suit set the rest of us off, even the grown ups are chuckling behind us.

Santa finishes his story and none of us move. The room is so quite as we all wait knowing what comes next.

PRESENTS!

We form lines and I am near the front so I get to pick something really good. I get up on Santa's knee and tell him about how I have been such a good boy before he even asked me. My dad is chuckling at the side and I feel a little embarrassed but then Santa asks me what I want for Christmas.

I tell him I want a skateboard as it is my most favourite thing in the world. One with a pattern at the bottom like a dragon or a knight. He told me he would have a word with his elves which is so exciting.

I pick up my present and we leave. Outside the ground is covered with snow and as I was walking to my car, my dad hits me with a snowball. That is it, he has declared war. We have a snowball fight which is so much fun and I definitely won as dad said I am the winner and that tonight I deserve a hot chocolate in bed during story time (as long as I don't tell mummy as she doesn't normally allow drinks in bed).

After putting the present under the tree, we sneak the chocolate upstairs and get all comfy in bed. I am asleep before the chocolate has even cooled down.

...

It is that time of year again but my dad isn't taking me to see Santa today. Apparently he doesn't exist. I liked Santa and even if he isn't real, I still want to go and see him read his story. I know it won't be the same, but it will still be fun.

We sneak the chocolate past mum and I listen to dad read a story instead. I do like it when my dad reads to me. I finish my chocolate and then I lie in bed, lights off and daydream about flying around on a big red sleigh.

I miss Santa.

...

I am standing at the back of the room feeling all giddy again. The nostalgia running through my body and the anticipation close to getting the better of me. They say that there are some things that you never grow out of and this is clearly one of them.

Looking down, I can see the bright twinkling eyes of my son. It is his first time here and he has no idea what to expect. I think that is what I am most excited about. Seeing his face light up when Santa walks out, watching as he goes from being restless to motionless as shock takes over. Then witnessing the realisation kick in and an innocent and completely pure happiness wash over him.

I beam with pride as he mouths the words to the story I have already told him so many times. I know this time is different though, there is nothing quite like having Santa read his own story and this will stay in his memories for the rest of his life.

Then my favourite parts comes up, he is hesitant at first but then soon joins in shouting with the other kids.

In my head, I am shouting along with him.

The End.

My last story before this was for the Fantasy Prologue 2 challenge and is a modified version of the first chapter in my novel. I hope you have time to read it and that you thoroughly enjoy it.

That is a beautiful and cheerful Christmas story with a warm sentiment. I enjoyed reading it.

  • We will always remain a kid at heart 🥰 Also, a small typo in this sentence: "Santa finishes his story and none of is move." I think you meant none of us*
