Little Sister, you have saved my life
Dearest LJ, You are eighteen, about to head off to college in one of the most prolific times in our country's history, and yet I hold no fear in my heart for your future. Your generation has been put through the ringer of insanity. From the gun violence epidemics in your schools, to the recessions and torn apart economics, to the sheer hopelessness of the Climate Change dystopian future, you have carried yourself with a sense of dignity and unrivaled compassion.

The Creek
Creeks are strange creatures! They are usually nothing but stinking, mud-filled gullies, more likely to produce mosquitoes and water moccasins than bass or brim or crappie. It’s likely in your average, shallow creek that a person wouldn’t even be able to work up a decent dog-paddle. But for some reason, young boys are drawn to creeks like flies to a moldy peach.

Hibernation
“Hibernation? You call this ‘hiberation’?” My sister was visiting from the frozen north. She used the term as if it should be in all caps. Or maybe even a country of its own. She had come down here to central Texas for a bit of relief. Lucky for both of us that she didn’t come down last month. Her eye-rolling was about the limit of what I could deal with whenever the topic of Texas and cold came up.

Life ...as a Twin
Being born with your doppelganger is a great thing and a little... not so good. I’ve never bought a lottery ticket, and I once spent an entire week in Las Vegas without so much as pulling the lever of a slot machine. But maybe I should have given it a go, because I’ve been lucky since birth—make that since before birth. That’s because before I was anything, I was a twin. Sometimes I marvel at the numbers involved: Only 0.3 percent of pregnancies result in identical twins. I often think about how being a twin is one of the few amazing things you can literally just be born with. Some people are born with a natural talent for music, or a genius-level affinity for math, or supernatural good looks. I’d argue that being born with your best friend is even better—but then again, I’m biased.

Unexpected Goodbye
One week every summer since I started university, I come and visit my mum. Our home has a very distinct comfort. It looks like a townhouse, red bricks with white window shutters. When you first walk in, you see the stairs that lead to our childhood rooms, to the right you see our small living room, and walking towards the back of our house is the kitchen. We also have a small backyard that we use during the summers to barbeque.

The Delivery
At the door stood the fussy man in his waist coat and cravat, looking so out of place that Travis almost couldn’t believe that he was there. There was a burlap sack on the ground beside his polished leather shoes and exquisitely creased black pants. What must it have taken to keep a crease like that on such a long journey?

Love Carmen
“Kai…Kai, you can’t lie around all day in the grass.” I rolled my head to the side to see my stepsister gliding towards through the tall weeds that grew along the outer skirts of the pond. Carmen was always looking out for me, making sure I did not get lost in my own world. I loved the realism of feeling the sun on my face, feeling the warmth rise even though I was lying flat on my back. I would listen to the willow trees wrestle in the wind and the birds singing their songs. Carmen’s words came through to me.
