The boundless love a parent has for their child is matched only by their capacity to embarrass them.
To Mom: I’ve learned a lot (and I am still learning!)
Filipino and Black. My mom is Filipino and my dad is Black. Growing up with a mixed background was challenging but rewarding. It’s the foundation of who I am and I have my mom to thank for the many things that I’ve learned in my 37 years of life. I’m writing this article as one way to thank you mom! I’ve learned so much but here are the top 10 things I’ve learned and I’m still learning:

My Mother's Plan
There was an immense time in the life of this universe in which none of us existed. And, there will again come a time when neither you nor I exist. We should all feel fortunate to have shared our brief sliver of time with Mom. Who could have known that such a tiny window in the existence of the cosmos could provide such a wealth of joy and wonderful experiences? Who could have known that the way Mom lived her life would have such a positive and long-lasting influence on me and my family and indeed, all the other people in her life? Who could have known that every accomplishment, big or small, would become a goal for which we also strived in our own lives? She was our golden standard, our role model, our guide and our teacher. So many of the things I have done and do now are analyzed within the framework of Mom's life. Maybe MOM had a plan. If she could have planned her life 92 years earlier, at the moment she was born, what would she have said?

An Unexpected Outcome
I think about my mother a lot. This surprises me because I wasn’t close to my mother. We didn’t fight or anything, I was not abused. She was not an alcoholic or drug addict. Disinterested would be the word, I guess. She did not seem to care what I (or my three sisters) were doing as we grew up. She worked as a waitress, so she was gone a lot and got home late at night. I spent many a late night out with my friends and had parties at home. I am actually not sure if she ever knew what was going on or not. Maybe she did, but did not care?

A Mothers Day Letter For Mom
Dear Mom, I am sure you know what today is... I hope you don't mind but due to a lack of finances, I was forced to be a tad bit more creative in terms of your mothers day gift this year. As a writer, the only idea that made any sense was to write you this letter. Besides, what can possibly come from the heart as effectively as a heart-felt letter.

The Beautiful Flame
For my mother, anger was the seed of her creation. When all seemed lost, anger was there to warm her at night, to promise honeyed lies of vengeance to strike down on people who had done her wrong, pettiness spiraling into hopes and dreams. It was the vessel of her soul, for all she had left in the end was her anger, her tears, and her bitter memories.
