Voices That Echo
Where is Mother Theresa when you need her? Who is the next Martin Luther King, Jr., and when are they coming? If I set the table, will the next martyr, please show up? I'm afraid we are heading towards World War 3; wars begin at least a generation before a series of catastrophic events occur in succession, only to be viewed as causes, in hindsight. Let's all take a minute to breathe.

Acts of Love
“You forget your key, hon?” There it was: the first thing Nancy ever said to me. That evening, I came home from work to discover that I had locked myself out of the apartment. Nancy, who lived next door and often sat on the porch we shared, looked on in quiet anticipation as I rummaged through my backpack in search of the key.

Herbal Remedies May Not Be the Cure for the Common Cold,
There’s more than prunes, oatmeal and canned tomatoes in your grandmother’s cupboard. Grandmothers really do know best when it comes to alleviating coughs, sniffles, teary eyes and headaches caused by the notorious common cold.

Steve
My wife’s brother Steve lives in a scenic mountain town where people go on vacation. It’s a world-renowned destination for adventurous souls. People work their whole lives to be able to live there. Steve lives there. He’s part of a close-knit community mostly separate from the tourists who visit. He also has schizophrenia, but he’s on the miracle drug.

To Pastors, Public Speakers, and Teachers
To the hometown heroes, our pastors, public speakers, teachers, and those who voice their opinions. Empiricism is a great way to learn and sometimes vital to survival, but you’ve taught me that the people who teach leave a lasting impact on society. Everyone’s perspective of the world is different but you’ve shown me that the brightest people learn from other people’s mistakes.

Sometimes Sad Comes Out Mad
Everything seemed so quiet and lonely in the woods on that chilly day. Being a porcupine was challenging on any given day, but it was especially difficult in the doldrums of winter. Everyone was so standoffish, rude even. Made him so mad!!! This day, however, things took an unexpected, welcomed turn.

Picasso's Owl
We arrived at Main Street Storage Complex on the first Saturday of June, ready to pick up the pieces of my father’s life. My mother walked confidently into the front office, my sister Lara and I trailing behind. Though an electronic doorbell cut through the quiet morning to signal our entry, the hulking man behind the desk did not look up from his computer screen. He feigned concentration in his work, but the reflection in his glasses betrayed him: I could see as we approached that he was playing solitaire. Long term storage was the perfect industry for a man who prefers to be left alone, I thought.

Our Beautiful Pea-Green Boat. Runner-Up in Return of the Night Owl Challenge.
As I climbed the stairs I could hear the familiar, warbling soar of a bow against string. The notes never slurred when he whittled a tune from the time-worn belly of his violin. They held their spirit, lucent and clean like polished glass.

My Big Little Brother
There is something special about the bond between big sisters and little brothers. As a big sister myself, I know it’s something that can’t be matched by anything else in the world. The sound of laughter, as your little brother sits in your lap while clutching the steering wheel, giggling and screaming as he slowly maneuvers the car around the empty parking lot. The smile that creeps onto your face as you hear his gentle snoring, realizing he has fallen asleep in your arms during his favorite Disney movie. The shared feeling of pride as you both stand in front of the bathroom mirror in awe of his handsome appearance for picture day, having secretly combed through his hair with Dad’s styling gel. The rush of excitement as you both sneak a spoonful of raw cookie dough from the bowl while Mom’s not looking. Simply knowing that the two of you will be best friends for your entire lives, is a feeling I wouldn’t trade for the world.
