A holiday hearth miracle
Irena pulled her coat closer to her body as the bitter cold wind bit through the flimsy, insubstantial layers of fabric. She had lost her home just as the holiday season began, adding another layer of biting chill to the already frosty air.

Dog Treats
โSit pretty Max.โ Mark smiled as the dog sat up on his haunches, front paws out as his long pink tongue dripped a bit of drool. The dog eyes danced with gleeful anticipation. โGood boy,โ Mark said with a grin. Ruffling his retrieverโs furry head, he proffered the dog treat he had been holding. Max happily, but gently, snatched it from his fingers with a silly grin. Turning, the dog darted to the back door where he waited expectantly for his owner to let him out. The dogโs soulful eyes were almost reproachful as he looked over his shoulder as if saying, โToday please.โ

Crisp & Even. Top Story - December 2024.
โWho was Stephen, mโlord? He is a saint or prophet I assume, but do you know why he is worthy of a feast?โ The king looked pleased, as he often did when I asked him questions. Despite his growing reputation as a font of Christian virtues like patience and hope, he mostly seems as if ordinary things vex him, but not questions. He is tall and strong; the silver in his hair and beard command respect without spreading seditious rumors about his advancing age.

Lights and Marshmallows
Maria could see how the night sky was riddled with stars safe and warm through the living room window. She was at her grandparentsโ house, which was thankfully near her familyโs place, so they visited a lot. Especially during Christmas time when many of her cousins and their families would also come to visit. Her grandparents not only had a huge front yard and backyard but their property was secluded by trees so she and her cousins were able to run around without fear of being disturbed by nosy neighbors. Maria was having a great time this Christmas, even though as usual, there wasnโt a speck of snow on the ground despite the season.

A Christmas Morning of Sausages, Bacon, and Love. Runner-Up in Tales of Hearth Challenge.
Angelika woke with a smile to the smell of sausages and bacon cooking. It was hardly the most traditional Christmas breakfast but had always been a much-loved aspect of a Higley family Christmas. "Nothing better than starting the festivities off with a nice hearty breakfast, darling," her father said every year. Although she was now, at 15, a little old to be getting up before dawn to shake and rattle presents under the tree, she still loved this day and time of the year. "Angel, breakfast's up!" called her mother, breaking the silence, she was enjoying.
