grief
Losing a family member is one of the most traumatic life events; Families must support one another to endure the five stages of grief and get through it together.
Whale Spotting
Monterey Bay, California is famous for a lot of things. This is due in part to novelist John Steinbeck, who immortalized the streets when he published Cannery Row. I found it overwhelming trying to keep track of the historical totems that litter the walkways of the district. Each intersection is the scene of some famous book or celebrity rendezvous.

Eight Heads Are Better Than One. Runner-Up in The Aquarium Challenge.
Mia Part 1: LIFE WATERS Our entire family was excited to watch the 100-gallon tank get set up, but no one as much as me after my solitary goldfish, Gilda, who lived alone in a simple water bowl, had also died alone.

Grief and the Holidays
The holidays are approaching again. For those of us grieving a loss, the holidays can be confusing and full of roller coaster emotions. Grief is always evolving and at times the feelings can seem to be out of our control. There is no pause button in grief and it is challenging to be in pain while there is so much joy all around you. You may even feel mad at the rest of the world for being joyful and celebrating. I like to remind myself that this too shall pass, and healing is messy.

Finally Coming Home
Monday, I hated that day. Especially, a snowy, freezing, miserable December day in Michigan. As I made my way to our break room, I heard the usual. “Morning LT, Morning Lieutenant Flynn, nice day, isn’t it LT?” My people loved to aggravate me. All of them knew until I had my first cup of coffee, I hated to talk. I went into our breakroom, grabbed a coffee mug, and poured a cup of the Elixir of the Gods. Just as I took my first sip, Detective Ellen Johnson interrupted me.

The smell
It wasn’t the delivery of the strange box that brought me out of my deep slumber. It was really the smell that seemed to come from whatever lay inside of it. The smell could almost be described as a musty, mildewy paper smell. Made me think back to when I was working at the bookstore down the street where I live. In all honesty, the building had clearly seen better days. It looked like it was being held together by just patches that seemed to multiply almost every time I stopped by.
