A Quiet Minute
She’s staring out the window and telling me about her day. I’m glad that she can’t see my face, glad that she doesn’t know how much my back hurts standing here, glad that she doesn’t see that I’m sad that she has to tell me what she did today even though we’ve not been more than a few metres apart all day, glad that she doesn’t know it’s taking so long because of the pain in my hands. All she knows is this quiet minute, searching for dinosaurs in the overgrown backyard, just her and her mumma, putting her beautiful red hair into plaits before bed.

Ablution
The path to the stream was overgrown and barely visible, but Walter knew the way. As a boy he had fished there for brown trout with his father, and later brought his sons with their fly rods and wicker baskets. Standing for hours in cool moving water, threading out the line, flicking the bamboo tip so the tied fly landed precisely, freed the mind and refreshed the spirit.

Single Mother
The day I become a single mother felt as if I had a significant weight lifted off my shoulders. I divorced my husband. Being married to my kid's father was like being married to a grown child. He couldn't do anything for himself. As he was growing up, his family did everything for him. Washed his clothes, cooked for him, picked up after him. They did everything. It was almost like he was a spoiled child. He got everything he wanted.

The Little Black Book
As I slowly opened my eyes, the cold seeped into my skin as I felt it sink into my little bones as we were told to get up from our beds. The thin blanket that was covering me barely covered my toes and would not cover my shoulders, making me scrunch up my legs to my stomach to draw in the warmth of my body. I was thinking a little while longer, so as not to disturb the warmth that held me.

A World with No Smiles
When you are preparing to undertake the role of a parent, what are some of the things you consider? Sleepless nights, feedings that never stop, poopy diapers, play dates, outings with family, etc. All normal things for new families to undergo.

ASD Snapshot: Eight Crane Toilets
I am in the women's change room at the local pool. Stepping into my bathing suit, I enjoy the familiarity of the half-lockers, pocked and dented; the tiled floor, two-toned—aqua and blue—and the wooden bench where I rest my tote bag. It's odd to be back, twelve years later, to where our children learned to swim.
