Worries of a Mother
Becoming a mother is a hard enough job as is, let alone being a mother to a child of a different race. As a Caucasian woman I’ve never had to personally experience racism. However, my boyfriend of five years is Puerto Rican, and he has experienced prejudice throughout his life. I believe as a whole that white people are out of touch with the fact that racism is still very much alive in America. Of course, a group of people who don’t experience racism aren’t going to see that it is still an ongoing issue. It can be hard to relate to something you’ve never witnessed first hand.

My Sister's Flip
I had just finished the book.....amazing story! Was it a true story? I had to find out, so I looked it up online and sure enough! The story was written from the perspective of the founder. It was a true story about her life and how she came to do what she had always been passionate about. I wanted to go. I thought about how much fun it would be to go and even more so, how much fun it would be to take my sister. Our love for animals was so similar. I thought about it and realized her thirteenth birthday would be coming up in a few months. What a better present than to visit a non profit animal sanctuary.

Divorce Story: an Act of Love
My parents' divorce taught me more about love and respect than their marriage ever could have. I will always believe that it was the best decision they made as parents and as individuals. A family that was dysfunctional and trapped is now less dysfunctional, more unconventional, but free to be better and truer versions of themselves.

Conscious Me
Hi I'm Starlet, my friends call me star, I've been through a lot and it is very hard to trust people. Soooo .....Let's start from the beginning. I was born and raised in our Nations Capitol, for a long time I did not believe, there was a better place to live. DC is broken down into four sections. Northeast, Southeast, Northwest and Southwest. My life started in Southeast DC, April 1985. Born to James and Essie Gorman, I have two much older sisters. Sarah who is 15 years older and Fatima who is 12 years older. Fatima often called me the mistake and the unplanned child and honestly, its true. Ma and pop were having marital issues, apparently mom caught pops with another women and put him out. Obviously he came back at some point because Boom .....Here I Am. I like to think of myself as the child who kept the family together but me being an accident help Fatima coup with life better, I guess. Because of the age difference my sisters and I were never close, in fact they don't know me at all and what they think they know is all wrong, Hell up until recently, i'm just realizing who I am. Here is Starlet's Story.

My Body Failed Me
Last night I did something really dumb…. I was browsing Facebook after my son had finally gone to bed and I came across a story titled “Privileged Woman Dials 911 for Formula at 2am After Breastmilk ‘Suddenly’ Dries Up” or something like that. Typically I would have known better, but to be honest, I was two glasses of wine deep and was feeling a bit invincible so I decided to read the comments.

Tie Dye For Kids
Going into 2020 I had imagined life would change, little did I know how much it would. After covid-19 hit and the schools all shut down I had to find ways to keep my kids from driving me crazy. Raising kids is not easy, raising kids during a pandemic is exhausting. Finding activities for them to do and making sure they have everything they need can seem impossible, so I have found a new hobby to both get new clothes my kids love and entertain them while doing it.

A letter to Mom
Mother hen and baby chick Short story by Perry F. There was once a mother hen who was all white. Her mouth and her crown were red and her voice was strong and smooth. She lived in a shed near a small lake. She liked to make funny sounds with her mouth and fuddle around in the grass. One day, she laid some eggs, and they were fertile. There were 11 eggs in total and she took great care of them. She stopped playing with the frogs and whispering to the clouds and spent all day sitting on her eggs, making sure they were warm and protected. She sang to them songs that she remembered her own mother singing to her, when she was still a thumping heartbeat inside an egg, learning what it meant to be alive. When it was time for the eggs to hatch, she made a small opening on each of the eggs with her beak and watched as each of her chicks found their way out. Some came out instantly and were full of sunshine. Some were more hesitant and a little bit afraid. They were all beautiful. She gathered them all around her and spread her wings wide so that every bit of them felt warm and safe. She vowed to herself to be the best mother hen she had ever seen and care for them with all of her heart. And she did just that. Every morning she would wake up excited to feed and nurture them, and every night she would go to sleep happy to have spent another day with them. When they grew older and stronger, she taught them how to dig for worms, how to clean their plumes, and how to stay warm in winter. She also taught them how to sing and play. They were happy chicks who spent many hours running in the sun and frolicking in the water.
