Tie Dye For Kids
from old and stained to new and awesome

Going into 2020 I had imagined life would change, little did I know how much it would. After covid-19 hit and the schools all shut down I had to find ways to keep my kids from driving me crazy. Raising kids is not easy, raising kids during a pandemic is exhausting. Finding activities for them to do and making sure they have everything they need can seem impossible, so I have found a new hobby to both get new clothes my kids love and entertain them while doing it.
My two boys received a couple boxes of clothes from an ad I found on Facebook marketplace before the pandemic happened. In the boxes were some tie dye shirts and one pair of tie dye pants that my boys fell in love with. My son Aiden thought the tie dye pants were the coolest pants he had ever seen and tells me they are the most comfortable pants he has. As long as a tie dye shirt is in either of my boys drawers that is what they wear each day. The time they are not wearing tie dye is when all the tie dye shirts are in the dirty clothes or being washed.
is 7 years old and Noah is 5. If you have kids you know that when they wear the same clothes over and over they end up stained and gross, even after they are washed. Every time Noah put his favorite rainbow tie dye shirt on I cringed inside, thinking 'thank God we are social distancing because if anyone saw him I would be embarrassed'. That is when I decided to help them make some new ones.
and Noah were so excited when the tie dye package was delivered. Tie dyeing is easy. Step 1: Place a piece of plastic on the surface you will be using. Step 2: Place some paper towel on top of the plastic. The paper towel is great for soaking up any of the dye that doesn't absorb into the fabric you are working with. Step 3: Choose a design you would like to create and wrap your shirt. Step 4: Add water to your tie dye bottles and shake up till mixed thoroughly. Step 5: Put tie dye on your shirt. Step 6: Let soak for 6 to 8 hours. Step 7: Rinse off excess dye then wash and dry in your washing and drying machines.
Having your kids tie dye their own shirts is a great way to keep them happy and clothed. Tie dye is actually easy and fun to do with little hassle or mess when you do it right. I purchased one pack of 5 white t-shirts size 6-7, so both my boys could wear them and two packs of tie dye. The tie dye came with gloves and rubber bands all I needed was water, paper towels and plastic. You don't have to buy new shirts. Since every white shirt my boys has is stained up and not totally white, we tie dyed them all.
We were able to re purpose all the old shirts that used to make me cringe and my boys could not be happier. I saved so much money and entertained my boys at the same time. and Noah are both proud to wear the clothes they designed and made themselves and I feel good about their newly dyed clothing. The next time you find yourself in need of new clothes for your kids and something for them to do I suggest investing a little in some tie dye and time.
