The Night Owl
The Night Owl 1/18/2021 for vocal.media Every evening after dinner, I have to go out and shut the barn up for the night. We don’t want things getting in or getting out. In the morning, I have to go out and open ‘em back up before sunrise. I have to feed and clean up poop on a daily basis. Oh, country living! Goats and chickens and a rascally, lovable mule. Basically, I am tied to the barn. We do have a Barn Owl, as do a lot of other people who have barns. She is usually coming or going at the same times as I do my morning and evening chores, but we work opposite shifts.

Maria
Her hair was the color of squid ink, and sometimes on long weary days it formed into a bush like state. He remembered when he would come home to her sweet smile, or when her toys were scattered around in messy piles from her attempting to clean the room. Those were the days he missed the most. She was only about two weeks away from her 10th birthday when she didn’t come home from school. The rain poured so hard that day that the streets were flooded by noon.

Indigo
Indigo's eyes slowly opened as she breathed in the smell of a new day. She was so delighted that she finally had a place to call her own. A place built by the hands of a man she had come to admire and adore - a man she lovingly called “grandpop". Indigo's life, at a mere 11 years old, had not been the easiest or the most glamorous. She had witnessed her mom get hauled off by police on many occasions, she was forced to trod up and down city streets begging for food and money, and she was subjected to sleeping anywhere she could find a little warmth. Indigo had resolved that her life would always be filled with uncertainty, fear, and sadness. This unpredictable existence with an emotionally detached mother and an absent father was, in a twisted way, her stability.

Victory
When I was little, my Nana would tell me stories about the Greek Goddess Athena and her owl. Little me was fascinated at the idea of a woman, a warrior born from the head of Zeus, who would keep company with an owl. Imagine having a creature who could fly into the heavens and come back with all the knowledge you needed for victory. I didn’t really believe that the owl had an inner light, I assumed the Greeks just didn’t know about night vision.

Ornamental Memories
“Fight!” screamed a kid nearby, so loud that Maggie flinched to cover her ears. She peered to her left to a see a crowd starting to form around the two boys, wrestling on the concrete. They were in the year above her and were always starting fights around the school, so she turned back and continued picking at her sandwich. “Dad should know by now that I hate pickles” she thought.
