I have been a fan of Gary D. Schmidt ever since I was introduced to his work in one of my undergraduate classes. Schmidt’s novel, “Okay for Now,” changed the way I thought about young adult and middle-grade literature, and I have been an avid reader of his work ever since. I am also a bit of a mythology buff, so I knew that Schmidt’s newest work, “The Labors of Hercules Beal,” was going to be right up my alley.

Chapter 1: Beneath the Whispering Willow Mist clung to the cobbled streets of Veridian City, shrouding the ancient apothecary in an aura of whispered secrets. Here, amidst shelves overflowing with vials of luminescent liquids and jars of shimmering dust, resided Elara, a young woman with eyes the color of storm clouds and hair like spun moonlight. Her fingers, nimble as a hummingbird's wings, danced over a mortar and pestle, grinding a concoction of lavender and moonstone dust—a balm for wounded hearts, she called it.
