Klaus: An Amazing Holiday Movie Except… the Teacher
While in the throes of the holidays, many of us sit down with family and friends and watch movies. Tradition, right? Though most movies or TV specials are campy, sometimes you get that perfect balance of holiday cheer, fresh perspective, and that good old emotional tug-of-the-heart. A notable addition to the vast archive of festive films is Netflix’s 2019 Klaus. The film is rife with dark humor, beautiful art, memorable characters, and a unique spin on the origin story of Santa Claus. Klaus has made it to the top of my holiday movies. It sits next to some classics such as Elf, Home Alone, Die Hard (fight me on this one), and a lesser known one We’re No Angels. Despite all the positives and academy accolades, however, one issue stands out with the movie. One particular character brings to light a major flaw in modern society and merits discussion. The Teacher, Alva. She's the love interest of the film and plays a large role in Jesper's selfish-to-selfless arc. Her story is simple. She came to the fictional Norwegian town, Smeerensburg, to teach, but as the years passed her bright optimism disappeared due to the town’s impossible feud. We watch as she overcomes her misery, sacrifices much, and works to establish an education for children regardless of the town's political divisions. She becomes a model teacher many hope to have in an American classroom. At the same time, however, Alva's story demonstrates the cause of America’s failing education system through teacher treatment and safety, learning prioritization, and inadequate funding. This article examines the portrayal of Alva as a teacher and how she represents America’s–and many other countries–exploited, underpaid nurturers of society.

10 Peppers Every Spice Lover Needs to Eat at Least Once
10 Peppers Every Spice Lover Needs to Eat at Least Once Ten peppers is just the tip of the iceberg. There are more than 50,000 different varieties of peppers, and pepper growers constantly create new ones. Because capsaicin is present, peppers are sour and spicy; the more capsaicin a pepper contains, the hotter it will be. American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville devised a method to gauge pepper intensity in 1912. A low Scoville number indicates that your pepper is mild, and a high number indicates that your pepper packs a punch. The Scoville scale is still in use today. Without the added zest that a chilli pepper brings, a meal isn't really a meal for many pepper enthusiasts. Peppers are a great source of fibre, folic acid, potassium, vitamins A and C, and they can also improve the taste of boring foods. There are many pepper enthusiasts in the US, and there are just as many websites that cater to their preferences. A mouse click will quickly bring up articles, recipes, and advice on growing peppers. Each pepper has a Scoville rating, as you can see. On this scale, several peppers have a large range; eating some of them is somewhat risky. Be cautious!

47 Ronin: The Movie
“47 Ronin”, based on a true historical epic from Japanese history, is about a group of 47 rogue samurai with no master (this is known as being a Ronin). The story goes that during a competition and mutual diplomatic truce one master tricks another into causing his own disgrace. As punishment, the emperor of Japan forces the disgraced master to commit Seppuku, or a ritual suicide by cutting of the abdomen/belly. This leaves the samurai that owed allegiance to this master as rogue with no house to align with. In a major decision, these Ronin choose to follow the laws of bushido which calls for a revenge execution of the guilty party, which is the master who tricked the other (Abdy, McLeod, & Rinsch, 2013).
