How not to get bored

Avoiding being bored requires for you to maintain a healthy balance in your mind.

Imagine a plastic cup with a small hole at the bottom, you open a tap over this cup and let the water flow in. A little part of that water is constantly going out of that cup no matter what, but depending on the pressure of the tap, you can constantly keep water in that cup. If there is too much pressure, then water overflows. If there isn’t enough, then the cup runs out of water. Avoiding being bored requires for you to maintain a healthy balance in your mind. It's like the illustration of that plastic cup and the tap. Except that in this case the pressure of the tap is constantly decreasing, and you have to swap it for another regularly, leaving it the time to build up its pressure again.

If you rely on one tap too much then It's going to run out of pressure very fast, not supply enough water into your cup and eventually the cup will dry out. There are many things which we can do, and I’ll draw a correlation with a tap as we explore them, so you get a better picture of how they work.

Digital distractions

This refers to everything, from our phones, TV and basically any visual device we can stick to our face to provide us distraction material. This works well and is definitely very effect, but it's a tap with a high pressure which also runs out very quickly. It's very efficient to fill in the cup, but you’ll overflow very fast too, keep in mind overflowing is also a bad thing. The good thing about this type of distraction is that the tap never runs out and always has high pressure, all you need to do is wait long enough for your cup to run out, then fill it up again.

So in case you are bored you can always rely on this to provide you distraction value, just make sure you don’t over do it else the effects won’t be felt anymore.

New experiences

Having new experiences is great, it provides you some amazing distraction material which last longer in your mind and leaves you craving more. You can consider this as a tap with some high viscosity liquid, it leaves your cup slower than other liquids, but the tap takes too long to build up pressure. You can’t just be chaining new experiences back to back, you need some time for your mind to digest the new experiences before subjecting it to something else.

This is amazing distraction value which is also very healthy, mind and body engaging

Achieving goals

Another act which holds some great distraction value is slowly building up on our goals, you can consider it as a tap which slowly builds up its pressure. Every time you succeed in your goal then you have the pressure increase, when you fail then the pressure decreases. The good thing about this tap is that it can never overflow, either the pressure runs out or you get good enough satisfaction. Once you achieve all of your goals, then the pressure reaches its peak which still doesn’t overflow your glass, but after that the pressure starts falling.

Mindfulness

Being conscious of who you are and what you want out of life is very vital, all the other distractions are external factors which come to “distract” what is inside, but with this we look into the inside to find distraction. Knowing who you are, what makes you happy and how to get more of that is quite unique and invigorating. This scenario is unique because it makes the hole in your plastic cup smaller, no matter what happens externally, and reduces the bar for you to be distracted.

The way this manifests in your life is the fact that you are contented with even very small things. Just breathing fresh air in the morning is enough to keep you distracted, spending time with your dog or just sitting looking at the sky is enough.

Organization

A good way of distracting yourself (which doesn’t work for everyone) is being organized and adhering to a strict program. For most persons they enjoy organization and doing things following a strict pattern, certainly this might get them bored from time to time, but overall it keeps their mind engaged because it knows exactly what to do next. When you integrate some fun activities in this routine, then you can never really be bored. It's like a constantly flowing tap.

Conclusion

There are many other things we can talk about, so many ways of distracting ourselves. What I want you to keep in mind is that distraction is a balance to be achieved and not a goal you attain, too much or too little of distraction will still leave you bored.
