THE ROAD

By Nyku BlonduPublished 5 months ago 2 min read

Transfagarasan is the road through the Fagaras Mountains, which starts in Bascov, Arges County and ends near Cartisoara, Sibiu County.

With a length of approximately 152 km, part of DN 7 C, the road connects the two historical provinces of Muntenia and Transylvania.

Various locations have been built along this route that offer accommodation at the highest standards and at competitive prices.

Most of us know that the idea of building a road over the Fagaras Mountains belonged to Ceausescu. The reality is that there were sketches and plans made before 1960 that contained the details of a road through the Fagaras Mountains. The project was abandoned because the budget at that time did not support such an expense, but the idea was resumed after the completion of the works at the Vidraru hydroelectric power station.

After the invasion of Czechoslovakia, in 1968, the issue of a strategic road was raised, but in the area of the Cerna and Mehedint mountains.

With a length of approximately 90 km, Transfăgărășan is one of the most spectacular roads in Romania, also noted by the team of the television show "Top Gear", which was impressed by Transfăgărășan during the 2009 filming in Romania. "It's the best road in the world! Romania, thank you for welcoming us!", were the words said with great emotion at the end of the race by the presenter Jeremy Clarkson.

A weekend drive on Transfăgărășan remains a unique experience for all those who want to combine the adrenaline, caused by the difficult road and the numerous serpentines, with the enchanting landscape, thus experiencing the most beautiful feeling in nature.

For the most spectacular route in the country, Transfăgărășan, approximately:

3 million tons of rock were displaced;

290,000 cubic meters of masonry material;

41,000 cubic meters of rock were excavated for the construction of the Capra-Bâlea tunnel;

20 tons of dynamite;

3,573 tons of cement;

89 tons of steel reinforcement;

24,000 anchors;

129 tons of welded mesh;

14,200 square meters of formwork;

1,750 linear meters of concrete tubes;

4,100 linear meters of pipe;

50 tons of metal structures;

6,900 cubic meters of sand;

6,000 cubic meters of gravel;

3,000 tons of screenings;

740 lamps for lighting;

830 transversal works were carried out.

Useful information:

▶️The road is closed on a 27-kilometer stretch for 8 months of the year, in winter and spring, due to the danger of avalanches, rock falls, and landslides.

▶️Thus, between October 20, 2020 and June 30, 2021, DN 7C - TRANSFĂGĂRĂŞAN is PARTIALLY CLOSED on the road sector between kilometer 104 (Piscu Negru – Argeş county) and kilometer 130.8 (Bâlea Cascada – Sibiu county). The closed stretch will reopen to traffic starting July 1, 2021.

▶️In summer, there are traffic restrictions at night, between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM, due to reduced visibility (fog) and unforeseen weather phenomena that may endanger the safety of road users.

▶️The road remains OPEN to road traffic all year round in the following areas:

- Argeş County - from Bascov to Piscu Negru (km. 104) / Capra Complex (km. 108);

- Sibiu County - from the intersection of DN 1 with DN 7C (km. 152) to Cabana Bâlea Cascada (km. 130.8).

The road is particularly dangerous, with serpentines, numerous curves and tunnels, so the maximum recommended speed is 40 km/h.
