The Boy on the Side of the Road

How a Chance Encounter Changed My Perspective on Life

By Jibran JalaliPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

I was on my way to meet a friend for lunch when I saw him. He was a young boy, no more than ten years old, standing by himself on the side of the road. He was holding a sign that read, "Need Help. Anything is appreciated." I had seen people begging on the streets before, but there was something different about this boy. He looked so small and vulnerable like he didn't belong there.

I walked past him at first, not knowing what to do. I had always been taught to be cautious around strangers, especially in situations like this. But something inside me compelled me to turn back. As I approached him, I could see the fear in his eyes. He was shaking, and his lips were trembling.

"Hey there," I said, crouching down to his level. "Are you okay?"

He nodded, but I could tell he was lying. "Do you need any help?" I asked him gently.

He hesitated for a moment before speaking. "I don't have any money or food," he said softly. "My mom and I are living in our car, and we don't have anything to eat or drink."

My heart sank as I listened to his story. I knew I had to do something to help him. I reached into my purse and pulled out a few dollars. "Here, take this," I said, handing him the money. "Get yourself something to eat and drink."

The boy's eyes widened in surprise as he took the money. "Thank you so much," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

I stood up and started to walk away, but then I heard him say something that stopped me in my tracks. "God bless you," he said.

I had heard that phrase before, but it had never meant much to me. I was not a religious person, and I had always dismissed it as a meaningless platitude. But hearing those words from that little boy changed something in me.

As I continued on my way to lunch, I couldn't stop thinking about him. I kept replaying our interaction in my mind, wondering how many other people had passed him by without stopping to help. It made me realize how easy it is to ignore the suffering of others, to become so wrapped up in our own lives that we forget about the struggles of those around us.

That encounter with the boy had a profound impact on me. It made me more aware of the world around me, more empathetic toward others, and more grateful for what I had. I started volunteering at a local shelter, and I made a conscious effort to be kinder to strangers. I even started attending church, something I had never done before.

Looking back on that day now, years later, I can see how much it changed the course of my life. It was a small moment, a chance encounter with a boy on the side of the road, but it opened my eyes to a whole new way of seeing the world. It taught me that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a big impact and that paying attention to the small things can reveal profound truths about ourselves and the world

After that day, I never saw the boy again. But his memory stayed with me, and his words - "God bless you" - became a sort of mantra for me. Whenever I did something kind for someone else, I would hear those words in my head, reminding me of the impact that small moments can have.

Over time, my life changed in many ways. I became more involved in my community, volunteering at homeless shelters and food banks. I made new friends, many of whom I met through my volunteer work. And I discovered a sense of purpose that I had never felt before.

But perhaps the biggest change was in my own heart. I became more compassionate, more patient, and more understanding of others. I learned to see the world through their eyes, to listen to their stories and their struggles, and to offer them a helping hand whenever I could.

In the end, it was that chance encounter with a little boy on the side of the road that opened my eyes and changed my life. It taught me that even the smallest moments can have a big impact, and that paying attention to the small things can reveal profound truths about ourselves and the world.
