Hiking in Australia and New Zealand

Bibbulmun Track

The 1000 km Bibbulmun Track is one of the best-known long-distance hiking trails in Australia. It stretches from Perth to Albany. Along the way are jarrah forests, fields with wildflowers, and the breathtaking coastal cliff of Western Australia. This trail is divided into eight sections with huts to rest in along the way.

Hikers can enjoy birds flying through the towering jarrah and karri trees and see spiny echidnas, bilbies, and wallabies. There are also ancient river valleys and bushland.

The 104 km Great Ocean Walk stretches along the Shipwreck Coast of Victoria in Australia. Hikers enjoy dramatic cliff views, beaches, and lush coastal forests.

Along the way are two well-known landmarks—the Twelve Apostles rock formations

and the London Arch.

There is also a lot of wildlife to see, like koalas and kangaroos.

The 56 km Hollyford Track offers the best of New Zealand nature in Fiordland National Park. Hikers pass by coastlines, rushing rivers, and dense rainforests. The track begins within the Darran Mountains and follows the impressive Hollyford River to Martins Bay. 

Among the wildlife seen are fur seals, the rare tawaki, and Fiordland crested penguins at Martins Bay.

You can enjoy the dolphins at Lake McKerrow.

The 426 km Hume & Hovell Track follows the footsteps of early European explorers in Australia from Yass to Albury. This long-distance track takes hikers by bushland, farmland, forest fire trails, and country roads. It follows the historic 1824 expedition route of the two explorers, Hamilton Hume and William Hovell.

The track includes over 100 footbridges and boardwalks, river edges, and forests. Hikers can find campsites to rest overnight.

The 60 km Kepler Track is located in Fiordland National Park. It offers hikers amazing views of lakes, forests, and mountains. Hikers can expect strenuous climbs and beautiful alpine meadows. The track is a loop that makes it easy to enjoy the scenery as you pass by. It takes three to four days to traverse, offering a panorama of ever-changing scenery.

Starting along the shores of Lake Te Anau and its lush forest setting, the track ascends the impressive Mt. Luxmore before heading across tussock-covered ridgelines offering vast views across Fiordland. 

Hikers can see the alpine parrot and the karearea falcon.

The 223 km Larapinta Trail takes hikers through an amazing desert landscape in Australia. The trail stretches through the West MacDonnell Ranges past red rock ridges, stark desert landscapes, and ancient gorges. Hikers learn about the Aboriginal culture.

They see the famous Simpsons Gap that is home to wildlife such as eagles and rock wallabies.

The 65 km Overland Track stretches by mountains, rainforests, and glacial lakes in Tasmania, Australia.

This scenic trail takes hikers through the Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.  This hike takes six days to complete.

The 33 km Routeburn Track on the South Island of New Zealand offers beautiful alpine landscapes. Hikers see glacial valleys and alpine meadows. This trek takes two to four days to complete.

While hiking, you see the Routeburn Flats surrounded by tall mountains and streams.

It passes through the Fjordland National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The 3000 km long Te Araroa Trail takes hikers from the top to the bottom of New Zealand. This trail is among the longest and most varied hiking trails in the world. It starts at the northernmost point of Cape Reinga, stretching toward the southernmost point in Bluff. Hikers pass by secluded beaches, verdant forests, rocky mountain ranges, and alpine lakes.

The Te Araroa Trail features the famous Tongariro Crossing, the Central Plateau's volcanic landscape, and the scenic Whanganui River.
