Earth is the third planet from the sun in our solar system and the only known planet to support life. It has a diameter of approximately 12,742 km and is approximately 150 million kilometers away from the sun. The Earth's atmosphere is composed primarily of nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%). It also contains trace amounts of other gases such as argon, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. The Earth has one natural satellite, the Moon. The Earth's rotation on its axis causes the cycle of day and night, and its orbit around the sun causes the changes in seasons. The Earth has a magnetic field which helps to protect it from harmful solar radiation. The planet is primarily composed of rock and metal, with a liquid outer core of molten iron and nickel and a solid inner core of mostly iron.
