Green practices for sustainable sports events
The negative environmental impacts of large-scale sporting events are becoming a serious issue. Large-scale infrastructure construction, carbon emissions, energy consumption, and waste generation place a significant burden on the environment.

Introduction
Sports events are important social phenomena that go beyond simple entertainment and have a profound impact on global society and culture. With millions of spectators participating and billions of dollars of economic value generated each year, sports events have become a key platform for international exchange and cultural communication.
However, the negative impacts of large-scale sports events on the environment have become a serious issue. Large-scale infrastructure construction, carbon emissions, energy consumption, and waste generation place a significant burden on the environment. In this context, the sustainability of sports events is no longer an option but a necessity.
This study comprehensively analyzes eco-friendly operation methods and consumer participation strategies for sports events. Specifically, we will explore eco-friendly practices in terms of event operation and innovative approaches that can induce active participation of spectators. Ultimately, we aim to suggest ways in which sports events can contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development.
Eco-friendly practices in terms of sports event operation
Eco-friendly operation of sports events is emerging as one of the most important tasks of the modern sports industry. In terms of energy management, the use of renewable energy is a key strategy. Integrating solar panels and wind power systems into large sports facilities can replace up to 70% of total energy use. The 2022 World Cup stadiums in Qatar will be powered by 100% renewable energy, demonstrating the feasibility of this approach.
In terms of resource management, innovative approaches that apply circular economy principles are needed. Key factors include introducing advanced waste separation systems in stadiums, minimizing the use of plastics, and designing recyclable infrastructure. For example, the Tokyo Olympics presented an innovative model for resource recycling by manufacturing athletes’ medals from metals extracted from e-waste.
Using eco-friendly food and products is another important strategy. Using local organic ingredients, zero-waste catering, and introducing biodegradable containers can significantly reduce environmental impact. Expanding vegetarian and low-carbon diets can be an effective way to reduce carbon emissions by up to 60%.
A comprehensive approach is needed to reduce carbon emissions. This includes implementing integrated strategies such as installing electric vehicle charging stations, strengthening public transport connections, and operating carbon offset programs. Recently, many sports events in Europe have introduced innovative programs to measure and offset the carbon footprint of spectators.
These eco-friendly practices are an important strategy to enhance the brand value and social responsibility of sports events beyond simple environmental protection.
Measures to encourage spectator participation
Active and voluntary participation of spectators is key to achieving sustainability of sports events. A multi-faceted approach is needed to encourage the use of eco-friendly transportation. First, carbon emissions can be minimized by operating free shuttle buses around the stadium and introducing electric and hybrid buses. Second, eco-friendly transportation methods can be actively encouraged by expanding bike sharing programs and providing safe bike paths and parking facilities.
Waste separation and recycling campaigns should be designed more innovatively. Gamifying recycling missions through smartphone apps is an effective way to increase spectator participation. For example, a system can be introduced where points are accumulated for proper waste separation and can be exchanged for souvenirs or discount coupons. In addition, a real-time environmental contribution dashboard can be used to visualize individual and team recycling performance to encourage competition and participation.
A multi-layered approach is needed to promote sustainable consumption. We operate a store dedicated to eco-friendly products in the stadium and sell souvenirs made from recycled materials at a discounted price. We also provide a platform where individuals can track their environmental contributions in real time through a carbon footprint measurement app and share them through social media.
Participation incentives are a key strategy to encourage spectators’ continued efforts to protect the environment. Various reward mechanisms can be introduced, such as issuing carbon-neutral participation certificates, eco-friendly spectator reward systems, and VIP seat priority assignments based on environmental contributions. In particular, SNS-linked campaigns targeting the younger generation and collaboration with influencers are effective methods that can expect high participation rates.
Conclusion
The sustainability of sports events goes beyond simple environmental protection and is an important task for global society. In this study, we explored various strategies for eco-friendly operation of sports events. Approaches such as utilizing renewable energy, recycling resources, using eco-friendly food, and reducing carbon emissions show specific ways in which the sports industry can contribute to environmental protection.
In particular, active participation of spectators is the key to realizing sustainable sports events. Strategies such as promoting eco-friendly transportation, innovative recycling campaigns, promoting sustainable consumption, and participation incentives are important mechanisms to raise environmental awareness of individuals and society.
Future sporting events will require a more proactive and innovative approach to sustainability. This will require environmental strategies combined with technological innovation, enhanced global cooperation, and ongoing education and awareness raising. Sports can be a powerful platform for social change beyond mere competition, and sustainability will be a key driver of that change.
