The wildlife of Poland

Poland is a large country in Europe with a sandy coastline in the north along the Baltic Sea. To the south are the Carpathian Mountains and the Sudetes. The country shares a land border with Germany, Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and a small exclave of Russia. Poland has dense forests and its heartland consists of central lowlands.

National Parks

Bialowieza National Park is located in the eastern state of Podlaskie. It consists of ancient and undisturbed forests and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is one of the last of its kind in Europe. Here you can see foxes, deer, and rare European bison.

Kampinos National Park is located directly northwest of Warsaw at a large river junction between the Vistula, Bug, Wkra, Bzura, and Narew Rivers. There are dunes, swamps, and pine trees.

Here you can see moose, beavers, cranes, marsh frogs, and butterflies.

The Tatra National Park is located in the southern mountains of Tatra County. It contains the highest peak in the country, Rysy.

Wildlife here includes Tatra chamois, marmots, wolves, otters, eagles, falcons, bears, and lynxes.

Slowinski National Park stretches along the Baltic coast in the province of Pomerania. It consists of dunes, lakes, and walking trails.

Wildlife here consists of eagles, owls, swans, and storks.

Bory Tucholskie National Park is located in Pomeranis. It includes a mix of peatlands, pine forests, meadows, and glacially formed lakes.

It is a favorite with such birds as cranes, eagle owls, and grouses.

Bieszcady National Park is located in the southeastern Podkarpackie province near the Ukrainian border. The park consists of remote woodlands and meadows.

Animals making their homes here include wolves, wildcats, boars, bears, beavers, otters, deer, and bison.

Native Wild Animals

European bison are a species of bison found across Europe and in Western Asia. In Poland, they are common in the UNESCO-protected, ancient Bialowieza Forest.

Tatra chamois are a subspecies of chamois native to the Tatra Mountains of Poland and Slovakia.

Gray wolves are among the most iconic animals in the world. They’re common all over the Northern Hemisphere.

Eurasian lynxes are a medium-species of wild cats that are native to much of Europe.

Red deer are among the largest deer species in the world. They’re one of the most well-known animals in Europe. 

European hedgehogs are a species of hedgehogs native to almost all of Europe.

Eurasian brown bears are a subspecies of brown bears native to most of Eurasia.

Red foxes are the largest subspecies of true foxes in the world.

Elk are also referred to as moose and are the largest species of deer in the world.

European wildcats are a small species of wildcats native to Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, and Scotland.

European hares are a species of hares native to much of Europe and Western Asia.

Birds

White storks are a large species of birds native to Eurasia. They’re migratory birds living in Poland.

White-tailed eagles are a very large species of eagles native to temperate Eurasia.

Boreal owls are a small species of true owls native to Eurasia.

Marine Animals

Eurasian otters are a species of semi-aquatic mammals native to most of Eurasia.

Harbor seals are the most widely distributed species of pinnipeds, including seals and walruses, in the world, They’re found in the coastal waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the North and Baltic Seas.

Harbor porpoises are one of eight species of porpoises. They can be seen jumping out of the water.
