Croton bush plants: An amazing sight to behold

If you desire cleaner air in your home, a good night's sleep and something bright and beautiful to look at you might want to invest in a Croton bush house plant. Many house plants are said to be beneficial in cleansing indoor air and the Croton is one of them. The first time I paid attention to a Croton I was amazed at the rainbow of colors in the bright foliage. I was walking towards a local Kroger store and there were eight or ten of the plants in pots sitting in the front of the doors. They were $19.99 each and I considered purchasing one or two at some point.

Fire Croton

Holiday bargain: I hit the jackpot

I purchased a small Croton plant for $3.99 at Home Depot but sadly it did not last longer than a few months. I later went online and was fascinated to find that this plant can actually grow in a yard just as large a shrubbery bush. The images I saw of the fire Croton made me think of the Bible story about the burning bush. I imagined having a house filled with croton's and my prayers were answered.

I was inside Kroger the night before Thanksgiving and there were quite a number of croton's inside on the floor. I did a double-take and then a triple one when I saw a sign that said $.50. I found a clerk who confirmed that this was indeed the markdown price. I purchased 5 Crotons for only $2.86 (including tax). I would have spent $100.00 had I bought them at the original price. The plants were in good condition and did not look as if they were dying so I'm not sure why such a drastic markdown.

Croton plants: Love sunlight

Croton bush plants have thick leaves that are shiny and leathery. The variety of colors include green, orange, red, purple, and or yellow. The leaves are stunning to behold and I find myself staring at them often. This plant will add an exotic flair in whatever room you place it but be mindful that Crotons love sunlight. If you are not able to have your plant in a room where it will obtain direct sunlight you might find the foliage losing some of its colors and ending up completely green.

Croton plants: Remove toxins and chemicals from the air

The large, dark leaves of the Croton will suck up harmful toxins from the environment just like a vacuum. These harmful chemicals include xylene, toluene, formaldehyde, and ammonia. The plant works as a purifier so that you are breathing in clean fresh air. Placing one of these house plants in your bedroom will help you to get a good night's sleep because you are breathing in better air through the night.

Buyer beware: The plant is dangerous for pets

I was going to leave a couple of my Crotons on the floor but my cat immediately began sniffing it. Thankfully he does not eat or chew on anything except his cat food. I read that this house plant can be toxic for pets and cause vomiting and diarrhea if ingested. If an animal eats too much of a Crtoton it could be fatal. For this reason, I now have my plants placed where my kitty will not be tempted to even sniff.

Croton house plant care: Love your plant and it will bless you

Crotons love water but it is important to use lukewarm water and keep the soil moist but not overly wet. Do not fertilize during the fall and winter when the plant is dormant but feed your Croton a fertilizer high in potassium during the spring and summer to keep the colors fresh and bright. If you take proper care of your Croton it will return the favor in various ways. I find my Crotons therapeutic as I feel peaceful each time I look at the multicolored plant. Studies have shown that house plants can help you relax which in turn may decrease stress and lower blood pressure.
