Wildlife in West Africa

The African country of Ghana has 221 amphibian and reptile species, 724 bird species, and 225 mammals.

Ghana is an African country located in the western part of the continent, below the Sahara. It boasts a wide variety of biomes, from coastal savannas to tropical rainforests, and it used to be a British colony.

Official National Animal

The tawny eagle

 This bird was chosen as a symbol of protection and strength. Two tawny eagles appear on the country’s crest.

National Parks

Bui National Park has the Black Volta River flowing through it.

This park is home to a large herd of hippos. Other animals seen here are antelopes, leopards, and monkeys.

Boin Tano Forest Reserve is a swampy area created by the Bisao and Tano Rivers.

This park is home to the endangered yellow-backed duiker and ursine colobus primates.

Many of the endangered birds in Ghana make their homes here like the white-breasted guinea fowls and the yellow-bearded greenbuls.

Kakum National Park includes the 1,150-foot-high walkway Kakum Canopy Walkway.

Here you can see Diana monkeys, red river hogs, and African elephants.

Among endangered birds are African gray parrots and hornbills.

Mole National Park in northern Ghana is a great place for hiking. Native animals here include buffalo, hippos, elephants, lions, and leopards.

Nini Suhlen National Park and Ankasa Resources Reserve is one unit located in southern Ghana.

Here you can see African elephants and Diana monkeys. There are also 260 bird species.

African bush elephants are one of two species native to Africa and the largest terrestrial animals.

African palm civets are a small species of mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa. They inhabit rainforests, savannas, and woodlands.

Aardvarks are among the most peculiar animals in Africa and mostly live in sub-Saharan Africa. They are insectivores with long pig-like snouts. These animals are nocturnal and solitary.

Chimpanzees are a species of great apes native to tropical Africa. They inhabit forests and savannas. These are intelligent animals that can use tools to hunt and find food. They gather in groups of 15 to 150 chimps.

Hippopotamuses or hippos are large, semi-aquatic mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa, They are herbivores and the third largest land mammals in the world. They are dangerous animals and can be very aggressive.

Leopards are a species of wild cats and among the most famous African animals. These are carnivores that hunt antelopes and other large mammals.

Lions in habit grasslands, shrub lands, and savannas. These mighty diurnal animals fear nothing.

Mona monkeys are a species of Old World monkeys native to Ghana and Cameroon. They live in groups of up to 12 monkeys with one mature male. These monkeys feed on fruit, seeds, insects, and flowers, and they are quite vocal.

Olive baboons are a species of Old World monkey native to 25 African countries. They inhabit the mountainous regions of the Sahara. They live in groups with a complex social structure and participate in lots of vocal and non-vocal communications.

Red river hogs also known as bush pigs are a species of wild pigs native to West Africa. They are seldom seen outside of rainforests and prefer swamps or other bodies of water. These are nocturnal animals and live in small groups of 6 to 10 members. They feed on roots, tubers, fruit, grasses, carrion, and insects.

Servals are a large species of wild cats native to Africa. These are solitary carnivores and are active both day and night.

Spotted hyenas are widely known as laughing hyenas and are a species native to sub-Saharan Africa. These are hunters.
