
Benin is an African country located in the western part of the continent. It is bordered by Nigeria, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
There aren’t any animals native to Benin. Due to its verdant topography, some of the continent’s most iconic mammals maintain populations here, including African elephants, African buffalo, hippos, leopards, cheetahs, jackals, and hyenas. Antelopes are also well represented, with 17 species occupying the country. There are also reptiles and 592 bird species living here.

African buffaloes are among the most dangerous animals in Africa since their behavoir is very unpredictable. They always live in herds with a linear dominance hierarchy.

African civets are large mammals inhabiting forests and woodlands. They are nocturnal and sleep during the day in dense vegetation. They dine on rodents, eggs, berries, and fruits.

Caraculs are a medium-species of wild cats native to Africa, Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Middle East. They have reddish or sandy coats and are nocturnal . These cats feed on small mammals, rodents, and birds, and can catch birds in midair by leaping higher than 4 m / 12 ft.

Cheetahs are among the most iconic animals in the African wilderness. They are also known to be the fastest land animals. These animals live in a variety of habitats and their requirements are good visibility, availability of prey, and lesser chances of encountering bigger predators.

Common patas monkeys are also known as hussar monkeys and are a terrestrial species of monkeys inhabiting semi-arid areas of Central and West Africa. It has even been introduced to Puerto Rico. These monkeys lives in groups of up to 60 individuals, with only one adult male. Other males join the group during breeding season.

Leopard tortoises are a large species of tortoises inhabiting East Africa and the savannas of South Africa but have been seen in Benin. They live in abandoned holes made by other animals such as aardvarks, jackals, and foxes. These tortoises feed on plants like thistles, grasses, and succulents.
Lions have always been looked upon as kings of the animals and can be found throughout Africa and as far as the Indian subcontinent.

Olive baboons are primates and a very important part of wildlife in Africa. Olive baboons are the most widely spread species of baboons. They are native to 25 African countries, and even inhabiting mountainous areas of the Sahara. These baboons are omnivores and feed on anything such as plants, invertebrates, and birds. To get a meal they will forage on the ground, climb trees, and swim if needed.

Red-headed rock agamas are a colorful species of lizards native to most of sub-Saharan Africa. Their diets consists of insects, but they have already been seen eating small mammals, vegetation, and other reptiles. Red-headed rock agamas are very territorial, and males fight each other for control of the area.

Sitatungas also known as marshbucks are a species of antelopes found throughout central Africa. They inhabit swamp lands. Their fur is a variant of red and brown, while their female counterparts are chestnut-colored. These animals are active in the early part of the day and just before dusk.

White-tailed mongooses are nocturnal predators of sub-Saharan Africa. During the daytime these animals sleep in cavities and burrows. They're solitary creatures that come together to mate.
Birds

Black-crowned cranes are a species of birds known for their golden crowns. They can be found in the wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa during the et season. Culturally, the black crowned crane is considered a symbol of peace, and it is the national bird of Nigeria.
Marine Animals

Hippopotamuses are among the largest land mammals in the world. They are herbivors, semi-aquatic, and native to sub-Saharan Africa. They inhabit lakes, mangrove swamps, and rivers, and territorial males rule groups of up to 30 females and young individuals. These are dangerous animals, very aggressive, and unpredictable.

Nile crocodiles are seen throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The live around swamps, rivers, marshlands, and lakes mostly prefering freshwater sources.These crocodiles are the second largest living reptiles in the world. They prey on fish, mammals, and reptiles.
