Native Animals

African bush elephants are the largest living terrestrial mammals on Earth. This is one subspecies that can be seen in Chad. These elephants live in herds of cows and their offspring. The adult males live on their own or in all-male groups.

African leopards are a large species of wild cat. They are among the most iconic large carnivores on Earth. Outside of sandy deserts, they can be found in almost any African habitat: from savannahs to grasslands and mountainous forests.

Aardvarks are peculiar animals. These are medium-sized nocturnal mammals living in burrows. They have long pig-like snouts, which they use to sniff out food. Their diet consists mostly of termites and ants.

Cape hares are also referred to as desert hares. They inhabit grasslands and semi-desert areas. They have well-developed legs for leaping and running and large eyes and ears to look for threats from their environment. Usually, a white ring surrounds their eye. Cape hares are herbivores and feed on grass and various shrubs.

Caracals are medium-sized species of wild cats that are native to Africa, Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Middle East. They have short faces and long canine teeth. Their reddish or sandy-colored coats help to keep them camouflaged. They are agile stalkers when it comes to prey.

Kordofan giraffes are among the most famous large animals in Africa. These giraffes are very tall but still the smallest giraffe subspecies.

Honey badgers have stocky bodies, large heads, and small eyes. Their lower backs are black and upper mantles gray or bright white. They prey on snakes, birds, eggs, frogs, and small rodents. They are also known for raiding honeybeehives to eat the honey and larvae inside. Honey badgers might look cute, but they are known for their aggressive nature.

Lions are the most famous animals found in Chad. They usually hunt in groups known as prides. They take down large herbivores such as zebras, impalas, gazelles, wildebeests, giraffes, and cape buffalo.

Northeast African cheetahs are a species of cheetah native to Chad. They inhabit wide open lands with abundant prey. Being carnivores, cheetahs feed on herbivorous animals like gazelles, hares, ostriches, and zebras.

Red-fronted gazelles are a widely distributed species of gazelle native to Central and West Africa. They inhabit the Sahel zone and can be seen in shrubby steppes or wooded savannas.

Scimitar oryxes are a large species of antelope. They are recognized by their long, spiral black horns. They have always been part of the culture and folklore of Africa.

Servals have the longest ears and legs in the cat family. They have coppery, golden-yellow coats with some white on their faces. These are some of the most playful wildlife in Chard. Just like domestic cats, servals play with their food. Having caught their prey, they might throw the animal in the air, let it scurry away, and then catch it again. They hunt using their large ears and acute hearing to locate prey.

Striped hyenas are a species of hyena native to the northern half of Africa, the Middle East, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. These are scavengers and feed mostly on carcasses. They are the smallest subspecies of hyenas.
