Top Storyville!

Where to find the ones loved by the Vocalists...

Okay, this was inspired by another writer, Cendrine Marrouat, who created a page where people who admired her work could find links to all the other stories published on Vocal, including her Top Stories.

Some interesting things I have noticed: my best moments for getting on the list have been in the spring and the summer (this does make some sense - less work; more time pretending that I am actually enjoying my vacation time while developing all of these different pieces). Autumn and winter seem to drain my energy (teaching multiple contracts can do that to a mere mortal like me).

If I have any future success with my work, I will continue to add to the list here. These are also in chronological order and give me, and maybe some of you, an interesting portrait of what I wrote and what Vocal chooses to love. I may also make lists of my favourites from some of you other scribblers out there. But until then...

Enjoy!

Yeah, my first Top Story was about food. And I still like this one... Followed by the following:

And No. 66 is...:

More to come? Who can say? I will keep putting out my work and hoping that it will keep gathering heat and interest from all of you fine readers out there. And you may notice something interesting as you look at these pieces: none of them are winners (not even runners up in any of the many Challenges I have entered). If this changes, I will indicate it on the list here and see if this is a trend that will continue. If not, I will continue with what I do best: hoping and tapping on a keyboard.

I should note something else here: I have decided to not spread myself so thin this time with the writing. I contribute to several other pages, and I have to say that this is really draining whatever energy I have left at the end of the day for my other writing and work (my guitar must be feeling pretty lonely some nights). So most of my focus is going to be on this page and all my contributions therein. The only other thing that might distract me are the various CBC Radio contests that I enter over the year (at this particular season, short stories are being accepted). My idea is to work on those by hand so that I can look over, edit and carve and shape things on paper in a way that never seems to work on a computer screen (Vocal writing seems to be a very different beast and I just let the words flow when I turn on the computer and have something to say).

So, those are my plans. And I think that I have reached the 600-word limit needed to have this submitted under Critique this time...

Ha, ha... ;)

How funny. My first top story was also about food. :)

Ha! Someone liked one of my stories well enough to do a wee copycat version and rename my heroine but keep Martha Agnes in the title (?). I finally decided to look at this piece that shows up with my "stories". This would be a compliment! He was attracted to it as a Top Story, but I'm not going for top stories; I'm experimenting with life, that's all.

  • What a smashing idea!

This is great! I know I've read a bunch of them but it seems I've fallen behind and need to get reading some more! I totally understand the seasonal "burn out" with writing and life, the unfortunate part of being a teacher I guess!! ๐Ÿ˜…

  • Good story!

  • This is an impressive list, my friend. I'd do the same, but I could fit it all into a haiku, lol.

I find that padding a story to reach the 600 word mark can hurt not help a story but we do what we have to. I like how youโ€™ve broken your writing into seasons.
