Bilbo Baggins, gentle hobbit of the peaceful Shire, finds his life upended when asked to accompany a group of dwarves on quest to regain their home from the dragon Smaug. Beset by orcs, giant spiders, and other dangers, Bilbo and company persevere and triumph. Also, Bilbo finds a magic ring.
