Golding's heart-breaking story depicts his view of pre-adolescent boys behaving wildly, in an adult-less society. Given the tragedy leaving them stranded, allowing their imaginations to run wild, as a gang mentality develops.

The "Beast" turns out to be the disillusioned fears of the boys, under duress. Leading to societal demise.
