Web of Lies: The Shocking Story of a Husband Who Hoodwinked All!
A story of how Babis Anagnostopoulos became pretty deadly

Caroline Crouch was one of many teenage girls who dreamed of meeting the love of their life, eloping, and getting married. When the fifteen-year-old high school student saw a wealthy twenty-seven-year-old pilot flying his helicopter over her school, she was instantly enthralled. Though their seeming fairy tale romance would soon turn into a startling tragedy, the two still eloped and exchanged vows.
A man known as Babis Anagnostopoulos, was violently awakened at 4:30 a.m. on May 11, 2021, in his rented two-story maisonette in the Glyfada suburb of Athens, Greece. Suddenly, three armed, merciless, and mask-wearing men broke into his sleep, overwhelming him, binding him with rope, and blindfolding him with duct tape. While they waited, they concentrated on his 19-year-old wife, Caroline Crouch, and their sleeping daughter.
Speaking with accents from Greece and Albania, the invaders wanted to know where the money was kept hidden. Caroline was unaware that the alleged theft would turn into her own homicide. Caroline was born on July 12, 2001, to retired engineer David Crouch and Susan De La Costa. Her family moved to the island of Alonissos when Caroline was eight years old. In 2017, while attending a Good Friday parade, the beach and scuba diving enthusiast got to know Babis. They tied the knot in Portugal on July 15, 2019.
Before her tragic passing, Caroline and Babis intended to construct their ideal home on a piece of property they had recently acquired, partially thanks to a €50,000 donation from her parents. Due to the fragility of Greece's banking system, they decided to save using this approach, putting aside around €10,000 in cash for construction expenditures.
In a last-ditch effort to spare their deaths, Babis revealed where their concealed money was while he fought against his restrictions. The thieves searched the residence for jewels and other valuables after discovering the money inside a Monopoly game box. They eventually became violent in their desperate quest for more, brutally suffocating Caroline for around six minutes with a pillow.
Babis, who had been unconscious for most of the ordeal, soon came to whence the intruders had left. Though his efforts were feeble and insufficient, he was able to partially extricate himself and dial emergency services. By 6:00 a.m., first responders found a horrifying scene: Caroline had already passed away from her wounds, and the house was in shambles.
Despite the fact that the perpetrators left little evidence behind, the police's early investigation showed traces of a brutal battle. When Babis revealed that two guns had been used, they began to suspect a gang of seasoned criminals who had been following the couple's lives and had chosen them as their target. There was conjecture as to what may have prompted such a horrific deed—was money really the motivation, or did Caroline's possible identification of her attackers serve as catalyst for their violence?
The media emphasized Babis' strange behavior and the contradictions in his story as the investigation progressed. Days later, Babis grieved while law enforcement pursued justice while Caroline was buried in Alonissos, the place where her parents had found love.
Even while there were early leads that resulted in the arrest of a citizen of Georgia, it soon became clear that the authorities were pursuing the incorrect person. The investigation's focus changed as evidence appeared to lead back toward Babis, revealing Caroline's deteriorating connection with him. Her diaries documented her inner turmoil: Babis' domineering character had smothered her despite her feelings.
In the end, Babis admitted—though under duress—that Caroline's untimely death was caused by an argument over their failing love. To hide his traces, he set up the scene to look like a robbery, but the detectives were not duped.
The legal system issued its decision in May 2022. Babis' conviction for premeditated murder, obstruction of the course of justice, and abusing animals marked the end of a case that misled the entire world and devastated countless lives. The woman who had previously declared his love for Caroline was cruelly taken, thus Caroline's daughter would never know her.
