UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson Killed in Targeted Manhattan Shooting

In a shocking act of violence, Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning. New York City police have described the incident as a “brazen, targeted attack” that has shaken the city’s business and healthcare communities.

The 50-year-old father of two had been scheduled to deliver a keynote address at an investor conference later that day. Instead, Thompson’s death has triggered a manhunt and left authorities questioning the motive behind what they believe to be a premeditated crime.

An Early Morning Ambush

The attack unfolded at around 6:45 a.m. EST in one of Manhattan’s busiest areas, steps away from Times Square and Central Park. Thompson, who was walking alone to the Hilton, was approached by a masked man who had been waiting for at least five minutes near the hotel entrance.

According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the assailant stepped onto the sidewalk from behind a parked car and opened fire, hitting Thompson in the back and leg. Security footage shows the shooter using a silenced firearm, making the gunshots nearly inaudible.

A brief malfunction with the weapon did not deter the gunman, who quickly resolved the issue and continued firing. Despite immediate medical attention, Thompson was pronounced dead at Roosevelt Hospital by 7:12 a.m.

The suspect fled the scene on foot before grabbing an e-bike and riding toward Central Park. Authorities have released surveillance images showing the suspect in a black face mask, a hooded jacket, and a distinctive gray backpack.

“We are using every resource available,” Tisch stated, noting that drones, helicopters, and thousands of CCTV cameras have been deployed in the search. “This was a deliberate and well-executed attack.”

Mounting Tensions and Prior Threats

Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, revealed that her husband had been receiving threats leading up to his death. While she could not confirm specifics, she speculated that they may have been related to disputes over medical coverage.

“Yes, there had been some threats,” she told NBC News. “He mentioned it but didn’t seem overly worried. I just know he said people were unhappy.”

Investigators are working to determine if these threats are linked to the attack. Officials have not ruled out professional or personal motives.

UnitedHealthcare Mourns Its Leader

UnitedHealthcare, the largest private health insurer in the United States, is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, a company with a market capitalization of $563 billion. Thompson joined the company in 2004, rising through the ranks to become CEO in 2021.

Under his leadership, UnitedHealthcare generated over $281 billion in revenue last year, accounting for two-thirds of UnitedHealth Group’s total earnings. Colleagues praised Thompson as a visionary leader committed to improving healthcare access for millions.

In a statement, UnitedHealth Group said, “We are deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of our dear friend and colleague. Brian was a highly respected leader and a friend to all who worked with him.”

Legal and Professional Controversies

Thompson’s career, though illustrious, was not without challenges. Earlier this year, he was named in a lawsuit filed by a firefighters’ pension fund accusing him of insider trading.

The lawsuit alleged that Thompson and other executives sold millions of dollars’ worth of company shares shortly before the public announcement of a Department of Justice antitrust investigation into UnitedHealth Group’s 2021 acquisition of Change Healthcare.

The suit claimed Thompson knew about the probe months in advance and sold $15.1 million worth of shares in February 2024. The allegations remain under investigation, though no criminal charges were filed against Thompson.

An Industry and City in Shock

The brazen nature of the attack has left many in disbelief. New York Governor Kathy Hochul called the killing “horrific and targeted,” pledging full state support for the investigation.

“Mr. Thompson’s family deserves justice, and we will do everything in our power to ensure the perpetrator is brought to account,” she said.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, reflecting on Thompson’s roots in the Minneapolis suburb of Maple Grove, called the news “horrifying” and noted Thompson’s significant contributions to the healthcare industry.

In Midtown Manhattan, workers and tourists expressed unease at the rare act of violence. A nearby hot dog vendor, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “I didn’t hear gunshots, but suddenly, there were cops everywhere.”

Questions Remain as Manhunt Intensifies

The NYPD has recovered crucial evidence from the crime scene, including three spent shell casings, three live rounds, and a cellphone. Authorities are also reviewing footage from the suspect’s appearance at a Starbucks two blocks away shortly before the attack.

Despite these leads, no arrests have been made, and the motive remains unclear. Experts suggest the precision and preparation involved indicate the suspect is skilled with firearms and likely acted with intent.

Former NYPD detective Felipe Rodriguez commented, “The fact that the shooter cleared a weapon malfunction so quickly shows a high level of proficiency.”

A Legacy Remembered

In a statement, the Thompson family said: “Brian was an incredibly loving, generous, and talented man who touched countless lives. We are shattered by this senseless act of violence.”

As authorities continue their search, Thompson’s death serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced even by those in positions of power. For now, New York City remains on edge as the investigation unfolds.

“We will find whoever is responsible,” Commissioner Tisch vowed. “This city does not tolerate such heinous acts.”

With investigators combing every corner of the city, the question looms: Who wanted Brian Thompson dead—and why?
