today was different

t started like any other day. 6am-wake up, coffee and cigarette, shower, get dressed go to work somehow, that had been me for the past six years. at a standstill. A robot. everything exciting in my life just came to an abrupt stop one day and to be completely honest I hadn’t noticed it until that day. I was everything I never wanted to be. a lonely 27-year-Old, no kids no man, no social life, no goals or ambitions just living the same day over and over. Pitiful right? but I guess that’s what life does to some people .it sucks you clean of all hope and imagination and leaves you dry and in an altered state of reality. the world suddenly seems less magic. I used to see opportunity in even the smallest of things but at that point in my life. I was too scared to even ask for a promotion for a job i had been at for 7+ years .. just didn’t believe in myself like I once did I had lost my light.

chapter one

"Alexa what time is it?"

Alexa-"it is 7:30am, have a good day today."

"shit I was supposed to be gone 10 minutes ago."

I said, as I quickly puffed down my second cigarette of the morning, and put it in the ashtray before heading out the door. I’m in robot mode, I’m listening to the same radio station, taking the same route to work, everything is in routine.

but that day, something different happened. something scary but the most amazing thing that’s ever happened to me. i was at a red light, right next to 65th bank on Hilliard Ave. the same as every day but that day. something caught my attention I see a man, running out of the bank with a facemask on and carrying a bag. No way right? nothing ever happens to me EVER but right now I am witnessing a bank robbery

"holy shit” I whispered to myself.

my eyes glued to this man as he’s running the same direction of my car. he’s closer to my car and we made eye-contact and something just came over me. my heart was racing my adrenaline was pumping and i felt like today was the day. I swung my car door open.

"hurry get in."

he stopped. He looked confused as if he didn’t know what to do. but I’m guessing he had no other escape plan. Shit he probably didn’t even think he’d make it out the bank. he didn’t take long to decide I was worth trusting. he hopped in and I drove off.

"uhm, is there somewhere specific you’d like me to drop you off or you hadn’t thought that far in advance?" I asked.

"why are you even helping me, you know how much trouble you can get in" he said looking at me like I was damn crazy.

"I don’t know yet, something just told me to help you and I don’t regret it" "nothing exciting like this ever happens to me I think this was meant to happen somehow."

" this is your life not an action movie, you’re risking your life for a bank robbing stranger" he said.

"Well I can i always drop you off and go back to my routine?" i looked at him. he got quiet for a second.

"there’s a motel a buddy of mine owns in Alkin county, if you can get me there, I’ll pay you for your troubles"

"I didn’t do this for the money" i said "you don’t have to pay me i wanted to help you"

"yea i know but if you get caught id feel much better knowing at least i gave you something and didn’t just ruin your life for no reason"

"believe it or not, whatever happens. you saved my life tonight. I ruined my own life 6 years ago " he looked at me again.

Then he turned and just looked straight. I could tell he was confused, hell I was too but it all felt so right, i turned the music up and

we drove 3 hours to Alkins.

"we're here" I said is I pulled into the parking lot.

he had fallen asleep somewhere between an hour and a half and two hours of us being on the rd. i didn’t mind. I got a huge sense of euphoria with him just being next to me. why was today the day? what was going to happen now? are we on the run? Do the cops know he’s with me? so many questions running through my head and a normal person would probably be scared but I wasn’t. I was ready for whatever life had for me. I was no longer scared.

he was the light that i had lost years ago.

"here" he said.

as he handed me 4 wads of cash. this is $20,000 I’d lay low for a few months if i were you. this should hold you over until you can get back to your normal routine" "I still don’t understand why you helped me,

but i’m grateful you did " he opened my glove box to but the money inside and something fell out. "what’s this?" he asked, as he picked it up off the floor.

"my little black book" I laughed.

“I used to write down all my exciting stories and memories in there. I haven’t seen it in years i forgot all about it honestly. he quickly skipped through the pages just skimming and when he came to what was my last-Entry he read the date out loud.

" May 4th, 2015, that’s the last time something exciting happened to you?" he asked raising an eyebrow.

"yea" I said grinning.

" that’s the day I bought this car, that’s the last fun thing that’s happened in my life until today."

he laughed, And flipped to the next empty page then he handed me the book and said.

"looks like you’ve got something to write about now."

the end.
