'The Vampire From Hell' Spends Life in Prison After Triple-Slaying

Caius Domitius Veiovis described himself as the 'Vampire From Hell'

By Criminal MattersPublished about a year ago 4 min read

Tropical Storm Irene, recently weakened from a Cat 3 Hurricane, dumped rain and plummeted strong winds on the eastern coast of the United States on August 27, 2011. Roommates David Glasser and Edward Frampton and their friend, Robert Chadwell, chatted in the roommates' Pittsfield, MA, apartment while waiting for the storm to pass.

Frampton was described as mildly mentally challenged but enjoyed playing sports and advocating for others with disabilities.  He competed in the Special Olympics and gave presentations to help caregivers provide their loved ones with more adequate care.

Chadwell worked as a counselor helping teens with drug and alcohol problems before moving back to Pittsfield a few months prior. He had been good friends with Frampton and Glasser before leaving town, and the guys quickly reunited upon his return.

Glasser worked as a handyman and played the drums. He had mental and physical disabilities, but like Frampton, he never allowed it to hold him back.

All three guys were well-liked around Pittsfield- until they weren’t.

Assaulted by a Hell's Angel Member

Two years earlier, Adam Lee Hall, a high-ranking member of the Hell’s Angel, had lured Glasser to his home and whooped him pretty good with a baseball bat because he thought Glaser had stolen from him. Glasser went to the police and filed a warrant against Hall. He was arrested on an assault charge two days later. Police found drugs and an illegal gun on Hall when they made the arrest. He was charged accordingly.

Due in court in September 2011, Hall faced years in prison if convicted. Glasser, perhaps naive to the risks of testifying against a member of the Hell’s Angels, planned to show up in court for his trial.

The three men would be found dead before Glasser had a chance to testify.

Three Men Missing

The storm passed out of Pittsfield, much to the happiness of the townsfolk. Les Chadwell, Robert’s brother, began to worry when he did not hear from his brother after days passed. The two were inseparable and spoke nearly every day. His calls went unanswered.

Erin Forbrush, Frampton’s disability case worker, could not reach him, either. She visited the house he shared with Glasser, finding the place empty, but the TV playing and Glasser’s truck sitting in the driveway. Frampton’s daily medications were sitting on his computer stand, untouched.

Les and the case worker filed missing person reports on the men.

Men's Bodies Found

Eleven days after Glasser, Chadwell, and Frampton were reported missing, their bodies were found dismembered, wrapped in plastic bags, and buried in a pit. Their autopsies later revealed the men had been tortured, gutted, and shot.

Police quickly traced the murder to Adam Lee Hall. With help from three accomplices- David Chalue, a member of the Aryan Brotherhood; David Casey, a backhoe operator from New York; and Caius Domitius Veiovis, a man who claimed to be a devil worshiper and a real-life vampire.

Born Roy Gutfinski Jr., he legally changed his name in 2008. He told the media his first and middle names were inspired by Roman emperors, Caligula and Nero, both known for their insanity and depravity, and his last name was from an ancient Etruscan daemon.

Gutfinski has several arrests under his record, including his first at  13 when police charged him with carrying a knife and at 19 for assaulting a 16-year-old girl. In the latter incident, Gutfinski and his girlfriend slashed the girl’s back and licked her blood. He served 7 ½ years on aggravated assault and reckless conduct in the case.

He was charged with kidnapping while still on parole, with allegations that he kidnapped two strippers from a nightclub. Those charges were later dropped, but he did return to prison on violation of parole.

After changing his name, Veiovis covered himself in facial tattoos, including the number 666 in the middle of his forehead. He implanted two sets of subdermals in his forehead, giving him the appearance of horns, sharpened his teeth, and split his tongue.

Sentencing

Hall and Chalue were each convicted of three counts of murder, three counts of kidnapping, and three counts of intimidation of a witness and received life sentences.

Casey helped bury the bodies with a backhoe. He pleaded guilty to three counts of accessory after the fact, intimidating a witness, and kidnapping. He was sentenced to time served.

Veiovis pleaded not guilty on all counts. There was no physical evidence linking him to the crime or the victims, witnesses testified that he was not present during the murders or subsequent events, and his girlfriend provided him with an alibi for the night of the murders. He was not associated with the Hell’s Angels or the Aryan Brotherhood and did not own a motorcycle.

Witnesses did testify they had seen him with the men the night before, and police found blood in his car, although it was never proven to belong to the victims. Prosecutors showed the jury diagrams of human dissections found in Veoivis’ apartment and showed them weapons, including knives and machetes, from his home.

In the end. Veiovis was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

At sentencing, Veiovis yelled, “I’ll see you all in hell, remember that, every fucking one of you! I’ll see you all in hell!”
