In a quiet Kentucky town, the brutal murder of 82-year-old Lois Jean Rogers Trent shattered a family already mourning a recent loss. Ms. Lois Jean Rogers Trent, 82, was brutally murdered in her home in Whitesburg, Kentucky, on December 12, 2021, just days after her 83-year-old partner, Mr. Jack Trent, passed away following an extended illness. Despite DNA and other substantial evidence recovered from the crime scene, the coward who took Ms. Lois’s life remains unknown, still roaming the streets nearly three years later.

Ms. Lois’s son, Scott, called and texted her throughout the day but never received a reply. He didn’t think this was unusual, knowing his mom was still mourning Mr. Jack’s loss. Around 3 p.m., he decided to drive to her house on Trent Road to check on her.

When she didn’t answer the door, worry set in as Scott noticed Ms. Lois’s car parked in the garage.

He called his sisters to explain the situation, and his sister Teresa rushed over. By now, panic had set in, and the siblings decided to force their way inside to see what was going on.

Scott discovered his mother lying dead in a pool of blood on the living room floor of the Trent Drive home she had shared with Mr. Jack. Someone had broken in and beaten her to death with an unknown object. He called 9-1-1 at 3:17 p.m.

Police secured the scene and gathered what they described as substantial evidence, including DNA, from the home. Surveillance footage from cameras on properties near Ms. Lois’s was also collected.

The state medical examiner later determined Ms. Lois died from homicidal violence.

Allison Trent Cantrell told Criminal Matters, “We were informed that there was really good DNA left behind at the scene because my nanny put up a fight. The murder weapon was also left behind.”

Who Was Ms. Lois Trent?

Ms. Lois was born on October 25, 1939, the eldest of six children. At age 18, she married Jack Trent, with whom she shared four wonderful children. Mr. Jack and Ms. Lois divorced a few years later, and she raised the kids and managed the household on her own. She struggled immensely during this time; raising children has never been easy. She remarried in 1986, but sadly, her husband passed away a year later.

Mr. Jack remarried and had other children.

During this time, Ms. Lois became a grandmother of four and a great-grandmother of four.

Mr. Jack and Ms. Lois rekindled their romance in 2012, although they never remarried.

Trouble in The Family

The Trent family endured months of odd circumstances leading up to Ms. Lois’s murder and Mr. Jack’s death. Ms. Trent-Cantrell tells me that someone attempted to kill Mr. Jack about a year before his actual passing. In addition to that, their son Scott was attacked and shot at by a stranger in 2020. That same year, someone shot his truck full of holes.

Ms. Lois and Mr. Jack also experienced torment from family members who would hide in the bushes, shine laser beams into their windows, and beat sticks against the side of their house to scare them.

Who Hurt Ms. Lois?

There have been very few details released about Ms. Lois’ murder, but her family has stepped up to spread the word and ensure she gets the justice she deserves. She was an 82-year-old woman, in the privacy of her home, mourning the loss of Jack, when monsters broke in and horrifically took her life.

If you have information about Ms. Lois’s murder, please call Kentucky State Police Detective Scott Caudill at KSP Post 13 in Hazard at (606) 435-6069.
