The Disappearance Of Maura Murray (2004)

The disappearance of Maura Murray is one of the most talked about and baffling case in true crime history. In 2004 , February 9th to be exact a 21 year old Maura Murray who was a nursing student would crash her car on a rural road in New Hampshire. Many witnesses did see her at the scene and some even offered help. It was stated that she declined all the help , saying she had already called for assistance. It was strange that no one could find any records of such a call even existing. Police had at the scene minutes later but she was gone. No one could find her, she left her car and all her personal belongings.

This case has captured the attention of many true crime enthusiasts and investigators for nearly two decades. Over the years many theories surrounding her disappearance were thought of . Some believed it was foul play while others believed it was voluntary disappearance. Extensive investigations about her whereabouts was conducted. In spite of this to this day she still remains unknown. No one has seen or heard from her to this day.

The Timeline of Events

Maura exhibited unusual behaviour on the day of her disappearance. She apparently emailed her professors and her supervisors. Her email stated that she had a family emergency and she had to leave the campus immediately but in reality there was no family emergency. She then left the campus and withdrew 280$ and bought alcohol. Then she went on a solo drive. To this day , her destination still remains unclear. There were some speculations that she was headed to the White Mountains. It was apparently her favourite gateway.

On February 9th , around 7:30 pm, Maura's car had skidded off route 112 in Woodsville , New Hampshire. A school bus driver and a passing motorist had stopped to offer her help. Maura had decline their help and she kept insisting that she had called roadside assistance. No such call was ever recorded. The motorist drove off and later he had informed the authorities about this incident. 10 minutes later authorities arrived to the scene but Maura was nowhere to be found. Where did she go? She left her car and all her personal behind. Authorities discovered that a box of wine was spilled in the car and there were speculation that she was dinking and driving.

Theories Surrounding Her Disappearance

Due to lack of concrete evidence , there were numerous speculations surrounding her disappearance.

• Some believed that Maura wanted to disappear because of her strange and odd behaviour on the day of her disappearance. She had a long history of personnel struggles both financial and academic struggles, and maybe she wanted to disappear , so she could have a fresh start somewhere else. Many other's argued that she left everything behind including her credit cards so this makes her planned disappearance very unlikely.
• Some believed that something terrible had happened to her when she left the car. It was dark and very remote location , so this could have made her vulnerable to a predator,
• Some even believed that she died accidently. She wandered into the woods and due to harsh winter conditions, she met an unfortunate death. But extensive search was done and there were no traces of her.

The investigation into Maura's disappearance was met with many criticism due to the poor handling of the case at the beginning of the investigation. Some even believed that the law enforcement had downplayed how seious this case actually was. Police had assumed that Maura had run away instead of treating this case as a missing person case or even consider Maura could be in real danger. There were many delays in conducting searches , which could have hindered the investigation.

It's been 20 years and the disappearance of Maura Murray still haunt those who followed this case closely. Her family to this day never stopped searching for answers. They still have hope that someone out there holds the key to all their answers.
