The girls lure Shanda to "the Witch's Castle" with the intention of scaring her, but the situation quickly escalates. Shanda is subjected to physical and emotional torment, including rape and se*xual assault, lasting for hours.

The perpetrators, Laurie, Hope, and Melinda, demonstrate a chilling lack of empathy as they continue their brutal assault on Shanda. The narrative paints a disturbing picture of the perpetrators' indifference to Shanda's pleas for help and their sadistic actions, including the use of a knife, fire, and ultimately, a fatal assault with a tire iron.

The aftermath reveals the cold-hearted nature of the perpetrators, who callously joke about their heinous acts and even visit a McDonald's for breakfast, callously comparing their meal to the burned body of Shanda Sharer. The crime is eventually confessed to the authorities by Toni Lawrence and Hope Rippey, leading to the arrest of all four girls involved.

The legal consequences vary, with Toni and Hope receiving sentences of 20 and 50 years, respectively. Melinda and Laurie, considered more culpable for the torture and murder, each receive 60 years in prison. The chilling details of the crime, the troubled backgrounds of those involved, and the legal aftermath leave a haunting impression on the reader.

The timeline extends to the release of Laurie Tackett in 2018 after nearly 26 years in prison and Melinda Loveless in 2019 after more than 26 years.
