Last Sunrise in Tokyo
Tokyo was a wonderland teeming with neon lights, shining adamantine towers, and the promise of unfamiliar excitement and opportunities. This held even more true for a young foreign woman being away from home for the first time in her twenty-one years. Lucie Blackman stepped foot in Tokyo in May of 2000 resolute on taking full advantage of the experience. She was memorized by the city and enthusiastic about obtaining a well-paying job, paying off her debts, and making her dreams come true. All of those aspirations drifted away into the humid light polluted skies when she one day ventured out in high spirits and was consumed by the vilest evil.

Any story revolving around a murder or some sort of kidnapping petrifies me! When those stories include the senseless, brutal death and taking of a child's life, it tugs at my heartstrings in a completely different way. The type of way that makes your blood boil and causes chills to run down your spine! And if that isn't enough and the perpetrator is never apprehended or brought to justice, well, let's just say there aren't enough words in a dictionary to describe the type of emotion that I feel behind that inhumane brutality.

I Was Born With the Devil In Me
Born Herman Webster Mudgett in a small town in New Hampshire, it was thought that this young man would turn his intelligence into a passionate career as a medical doctor. For Herman Mudgett was impassioned regarding the medical field, even rumored to have assisted the local doctor in his birth town as a young man. Mudgett enrolled initially at the University of Vermont at the age of eighteen but left after being dissatisfied with his first-year studies. He transferred his studies to the University of Michigan, focusing on surgical procedures. Mudgett completed his studies at the University of Michigan Medical School in the year 1884, however, a widowed woman making claims about his proposal to a baseless marriage nearly thwarted his graduation.

The Only survivor of her family: Brenda Lin
It was only this year that I learnt about this story, as I was watching the news, which not only shocked me, just from learning about the story, but because the crime happened in the country I am living in – Australia. Mind you, Australia is a big country, but it surprised me that I did not even know about this story. This story is set back in 2009 where a young girl named Brenda who, at the time would have been 15 years old. Was on a school trip to New Caledonia with Cheltenham Girls High School, when the murdered killed all of Brenda’s family members, which included her parents, two brothers and aunt (sister of her mother). That murdered was charged in 2011 and that person happened to be the uncle of Brenda (the brother in law of the family), known as Robert Xie. It wasn’t until 2017, that Robert was found guilty of murdering all five family members. I learnt about this story this year because, it was until February of 2021, that Chief Justice Tom Bathurst and Justices Robert Allan Hulme and Robert Beech-Jones rejected Xie’s appeal to be released from jail. Which I cannot understand why this guy, Xie would even think he would be allowed out on parole or bail. But then, it wouldn’t surprise me because, no matter where in the world you live, the justice system isn’t really fair. Sometimes it will let those who have done hideous crimes out on parole or bail. Yes, some of these people may turn their lives around or they may decide to repeat the offence again, which could be worse than the first crime they committed.

Delay Diploma in Dentistry Destroyed Doc
Delayed Diploma in Dentistry Destroyed Doc Five short months changed the course of history for the young man, born John “Doc” Henry Holliday, in Griffin, Georgia. Venturing hundreds of miles north to attend the best Dental College in the country in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Holliday proved his dental mastery in March of 1872. Unfortunately, he was forbidden from officially graduating until he reached the age requirement of twenty-one. Rather than work for another dentist until his birthday in August, Doc decided to travel the world, in hopes of finding the perfect place to open his own dental practice.

The Bloody Benders
Southeast Kansas had its very own serial killer family -- possibly the first serial killer family of the United States. The Bender family has long been a subject of gruesome lore in the area where I was raised, and over the decades, the interest has never waned. With the advent of websites that share newspaper archives, the depth of knowledge about this bizarre family as well as the spread of conjectures, misinformation, and hypothetical circumstances has only increased the mystery.
